Brazilian Driver Rafael Camara Joins Haas For 2027 Formula 1 Season

Brazilian racer Rafael Camara will step into Formula 1 in 2027 with Haas, marking a major milestone in his rapid rise through the junior categories.
The 21‑year‑old currently leads the Formula 2 standings and was selected after Haas evaluated four candidates for the seat. His promotion continues the team’s shift toward developing young talent. Next year, Camara and fellow Ferrari academy driver Oliver Bearman are expected to form one of the grid’s youngest line‑ups.
Haas chose Camara over reigning F2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli and reserves Jack Doohan and Ryo Hirakawa after assessing them in previous‑generation Formula 1 machinery.
Rafael Camara Joins Haas
Haas conducted a multi‑driver evaluation at Portugal’s Portimão circuit in August, where Camara, Fornaroli and Hirakawa were tested in older F1 cars. Doohan completed his assessment separately. According to team principal Ayao Komatsu, Camara impressed immediately: “He showed us more than just raw speed… Rafa managed to create an environment to get the best out of himself.” Komatsu highlighted Camara’s adaptability, noting how quickly he learned the car despite limited preparation time.
The decision reflects Haas’ long‑term strategy. With Esteban Ocon departing at the end of the season and Bearman expected to be confirmed soon, the team is building around two Ferrari‑backed prospects. Camara’s strong F2 campaign – where he has demonstrated consistency, racecraft, and maturity – made him the standout option.
What Camara’s Arrival Means
Haas’ decision signals confidence in Camara’s potential and a willingness to invest in youth. The team has often relied on experienced drivers, but the upcoming Bearman‑Camara pairing suggests a shift toward long‑term development. Both drivers are products of the Ferrari Driver Academy, strengthening the technical relationship between the teams.
Camara’s promotion also adds intrigue to the 2027 grid. His F2 performances indicate strong race pace and composure under pressure – qualities Haas hopes will translate into points‑scoring consistency. With Ocon leaving and Haas yet to officially confirm their second seat, Camara’s arrival marks the start of a new era for the American outfit.
