Here is our Catalunya Grand Prix preview as Formula 1 heads to Barcelona for round seven of the 2026 season at one of the sport's most complete and demanding circuits.

Few venues provide a better all-round test of both car and driver than the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

The combination of high-speed corners, heavy braking zones, long straights and abrasive surface means teams must arrive with a complete package.

While overtaking has traditionally been difficult around the Spanish circuit, last year's race featured 78 completed passes, suggesting Formula 1's current generation of cars may be capable of producing more wheel-to-wheel action than in previous seasons.

Barcelona is one of the most valuable circuits on the Formula 1 calendar for evaluating overall car performance.

The 4.657km layout features 14 corners and places significant physical demands on drivers, with long, sweeping turns.

Tyre management is also a major factor. The abrasive track surface and high temperatures expected this weekend will place considerable stress on the front-left tyre, while thermal degradation is often among the highest seen all season.

This year, Pirelli has selected the C2, C3 and C4 compounds, one step softer than the traditional Barcelona allocation. The decision has been made in an effort to encourage more varied race strategies and potentially increase the number of pit stops.

Weather conditions are expected to remain warm and sunny throughout the weekend, with temperatures approaching 30°C by Sunday's Grand Prix.

Mercedes arrive in Spain as the clear favourites with most UK betting sites after another dominant display in Monaco. Kimi Antonelli extended his remarkable winning streak to five consecutive races, becoming one of the youngest drivers in Formula 1 history to put together such a run of victories.

The Italian now holds a commanding 66-point advantage in the Drivers' Championship and appears increasingly difficult to stop.

However, Barcelona may provide one of the strongest opportunities yet for Ferrari to challenge Mercedes.

Lewis Hamilton continued his resurgence with another podium in Monaco, his third of the season, while Ferrari demonstrated encouraging pace all weekend. Barcelona traditionally rewards balanced cars capable of performing in every corner type, something Ferrari has steadily improved throughout 2026.

Hamilton has now moved ahead of George Russell into second in the championship, and arrives in Spain with growing momentum.

Attention will also focus on Charles Leclerc after a disappointing Monaco Grand Prix ended in the barriers. Ferrari will be eager to prove those concerns are firmly behind them this weekend.

McLaren, meanwhile, will be hoping for a significant response after struggling badly in Monte Carlo. Both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri endured frustrating weekends, but Barcelona's faster, more flowing layout should suit the MCL40 far better than Monaco's low-speed confines.

Piastri enters the weekend as the defending Catalunya Grand Prix winner after converting pole position into victory here in 2025, while Norris secured pole in 2024.

Red Bull remain one of the biggest unknowns heading into the weekend. Max Verstappen's early retirement in Monaco denied the team a chance to properly assess its pace. However, Isack Hadjar's maiden Formula 1 podium suggested there is strong potential within the RB22 package.

Catalunya Grand Prix Predictions

Mercedes are still the team to beat, and Antonelli's extraordinary run of form makes him the favourite once again.

However, Barcelona's status as Formula 1's ultimate all-round circuit could tighten the field considerably. Ferrari appear increasingly competitive, and both Hamilton and Leclerc should be firmly in contention throughout the weekend.

McLaren is expected to rebound strongly after Monaco, with the circuit's high-speed sections likely to suit both Norris and Piastri.

Red Bull also cannot be discounted, given Verstappen's ability to extract performance from difficult situations.

As always in Barcelona, success will come down to balance. Teams must manage tyre degradation, maximise aerodynamic efficiency and maintain consistency through a circuit that exposes every weakness.
