Palmer, Foden and Trent Axed From England World Cup Squad
Man City’s Phil Foden, Chelsea forward Cole Palmer and Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold all look set to miss out on Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the 2026 World Cup.
Tuchel officially names his 26-man squad on Friday as he looks to end a 60-year wait for an international trophy for the Three Lions.
But after inconsistent seasons for Foden and Palmer in particular, both now look set to miss out on a ticket to the US, Canada and Mexico. Trent, who has had a mixed debut campaign at Madrid after signing from Liverpool on a free transfer, has also failed to make the cut.
Slots in the number 10 role have been taken up by Arsenal’s Eberechi Eze, Morgan Rogers of Aston Villa and Real’s Jude Bellingham.
At right-back, Trent misses out to Spurs man Djed Spence and Newcastle’s Tino Livramento, while Reece James (Chelsea) also makes the plane.
Elsewhere, Nottingham Forests’ Morgan Gibbs-White can also count himself unlucky to miss out after a superb second half to the season. Also missing out is Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, who with 66 caps for his country, was expected to be brought in for his vast international tournament experience.
We also have some eyebrow-raising inclusions.
In the squad is Ivan Toney, who hasn’t been in the international picture since joining Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli last year, while Jordan Henderson has played less than an hour of Premier League football for Brentford since the end of March.
England go into the tournament as 6/1 third-favourites to lift the trophy, behind Spain (9/2) and France (5/1). They begin their World Cup quest against Croatia on 17 June in Arlington, Texas, before completing their group stage campaign against Ghana and Panama.
