Spygate 2.0 Sweeps Championship Play-Off Buildup
A bizarre spying story has emerged in the Championship over the last 24 hours and Southampton now look set to be charged for two breaches of English Football League (EFL) regulations.
The Saints travel to Middlesbrough for a lunchtime kick-off on Saturday in the Championship play-offs, after fourth and fifth place finishes in the regular campaign.
But the build-up has been dominated by reports that a Southampton performance analyst was spotted acting suspiciously on the grounds of Boro’s training complex.
After being approached by furious Middlesbrough club staff, the intruder hurriedly deleted all the training footage he acquired before leaving the premises.
But the incident has been escalated by this weekend’s hosts and Southampton could be set for a hefty sanction if found guilty by an EFL panel.
Leeds Spygate Precedent
This isn’t the first time we’ve had a tale of espionage to deal with on the eve of a crunch Championship play-off game.
In 2019, a Leeds United employee was spotted collecting footage on a public footpath outside the training ground of Derby County, in the build-up to their two-leg showdown.
Then Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa went on to produce an extraordinary hour-long presentation of his staff’s findings a few days later, and Leeds were consequently fined £200,000 by the EFL.
Derby went on to spring an upset before losing in the play-off final to Aston Villa.
The Charges
Southampton are accused of two breaches:
- Not acting in the utmost good faith towards their opponents.
- Attempting to observe opponent training sessions within 72 hours of a competitive match.
In a statement released yesterday evening, Southampton said they acknowledge the EFL’s findings and they will be fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
Meanwhile, in the other Championship play-off semi-final first leg, Hull and Millwall played out a scrappy 0-0 draw on Friday night.
