Ipswich on Cusp of Instant Premier League Return
Ipswich Town are one win away from securing an instant return to the Premier League. However, after the midweek draw at Southampton, the fight for second place in the EFL Championship has gone to a nail-biting final day.
Saints & Tractor Boys Play Out Thrilling Draw
Southampton and Ipswich clashed in a promotion battle at St Mary’s on Tuesday night. If Ipswich had won, they would have almost certainly secured second place, while a Saints victory would have preserved their chances of finishing in the top two.
It was a thriller on the coast, as Southampton and Ipswich played out a 2-2 draw. Town appeared to be in control when Wes Burns scored shortly after the break, but Ryan Manning and Cyle Larin's goals dramatically reversed the course of the match.
Super sub Jack Clarke saved the day for Ipswich, netting in the 87th minute to end Southampton’s automatic promotion aspirations. Clarke also hit the post late on and was a real threat for the visitors.
All Set for a Crazy Final Day
The St Mary’s stalemate has beautifully set up the final day in the Championship, with three teams battling for second place. Coventry City have the title sewn up, but who will join Frank Lampard’s Sky Blues in next season’s EPL?
Ipswich hold the cards, as a win against Queens Park Rangers this Saturday would seal the deal. However, if Town drop the ball against Rangers at Portman Road, Millwall and Middlesbrough could be ready to pounce.
Millwall have had a remarkable season under Alex Neil, with the Lions just a point behind Ipswich. However, due to their inferior goal difference, the Londoners need to beat relegated Oxford United on the final day and hope that Ipswich slip up.
Middlesbrough are third, two points away from second. Boro need to get the better of top-six hopefuls Wrexham and hope that Millwall drop points and Ipswich lose to QPR.
