Swansea City have been the surprise package in the EFL Championship so far this season, winning five games to top the second-tier table.

The Welsh team were relegated from England’s top flight at the end of the 2017-18 season and have never been back. However, can the Swans secure promotion this term?

Swans Make Sensational Start

Swansea lead the Championship during the first international break of the 2026-27 season. City have made a superb start, winning five of their opening eight league fixtures.

Vitor Matos’ men mean business, sitting two points above title contenders West Ham United and Middlesbrough. Overall, City have collected 17 points from a possible 24 and have lost just once.

The side from South Wales bounced back from the 3-1 loss at Southampton in style, winning the next two to return to the summit. After a 3-1 home victory over Burnley, the Swans won 2-1 at Lincoln City before the break.

Can City Keep the Momentum Going?

Swansea return to action next weekend with a home match against Norwich City. The Canaries have already suffered five defeats and have shipped 17 goals.

Since winning four of five league and cup fixtures, Philippe Clement’s troops have suffered successive defeats to Middlesbrough, Manchester City (Carabao Cup), and Bolton Wanderers.

Swansea will head into that one at the Swansea.com Stadium as the favourites, and Matos and his in-form team will fancy their chances of racking up another three points to keep their place at the top.

Life in the Championship has been tough going since Swansea’s EPL relegation nine seasons ago. Since finishing fourth under Steve Cooper in 2020-21, Swansea have finished mid-table five times in a row.

However, with Matos at the helm and Snoop Dogg involved as a co-owner and investor, things are looking up for the Welsh side. Can Swansea end their long stay in England’s second tier and return to the promised land in 2027?
