Arsenal fell 2-1 at home to AFC Bournemouth Saturday in a Premier League matchup. Sporting CP downed Estrela 1-0 on the road in a Primeira Liga matchup Saturday in their previous matchup. In the first leg of this quarterfinal leg, Arsenal earned a 1-0 road triumph last Tuesday to lead by that margin heading into the second leg.
All-time, the teams have faced off just twice in Champions League play. Arsenal rolled to a 5-1 win on Match Day 5 in the 2024/25 Champions League before last week’s win. Let’s take a look and give you our top Arsenal vs. Sporting CP betting tips.
Sporting CP Hoping to Make Something Happen
Sporting CP managed to get back in the win column in Primiera Liga play by downing Estrela Saturday. They ran their mark to 22-1-5 on the year in league play. That was good for second in league action, five points behind FC Porto, though they have a match in hand. Against Estrela, the match was tight the whole way. It was scoreless at the half before Daniel Bragança got Sporting on the board in the 59th minute of play. Estrela had a few opportunities late in the match but Rui Silva was up to the task to secure the win. Sporting was edged 3-2 in shots on target in the match yet prevailed.
Against Arsenal in the first leg of the quarterfinal, both teams struggled to get much going. Sporting had a couple of chances early only to come up empty and the match was scoreless at the half. Things weren’t much different in the second half and it seemed that the match was headed for a scoreless draw. Instead, in stoppage time, Sporting gave up the lone goal of the match and ended up on the wrong side of the scoreboard. Sporting owned a 5-4 advantage in shots on target and an 11-8 margin in shot attempts, only to fall short. Morten Hjulmand, who missed the first leg due to yellow card accumulation, should be back in the midfield for Sporting here.
Arsenal Looking to Earn Semifinal Spot
Arsenal won the first leg of the quarterfinal but stumbled in domestic play as they fell at home to AFC Bournemouth Saturday in Premier League action. That marked their third straight loss in domestic play and Mikel Arteta has to hope he can right the ship. The Gunners have a big Premier League showdown with Man City this weekend. Against Bournemouth, Arsenal found themselves down 1-0 after surrendering a goal in the 17th minute of play. Viktor Gyökeres tied the match on a penalty kick in the 35th minute for the Gunners. That was the score at the half. In the second half, Gyökeres nearly gave Arsenal the lead in the 64th minute but was ruled offside. They allowed the winning goal in the 74th minute and failed to find the equalizer.
In the first leg against Sporting, Arsenal started slowly. David Raya had to make a couple big stops in the opening minutes to keep the game scoreless. After that, things settled down and the match was scoreless at halftime. There weren’t a ton of opportunities for either side in the second half and we reached stoppage time with the match still scoreless. Kai Havertz scored in the 90'+1' minute and that proved to be the difference in the match. Raya made five saves for the clean sheet to give Arsenal the win. Declan Rice didn’t practice Monday and his status is up in the air here. Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard, Jurriën Timber and Riccardo Calafiori all are likely out here as well.
Sporting CP vs. Arsenal Prediction
The fact that Sporting only finds themselves down a goal entering the second leg gives them a chance. Their problem is that they’ve been much better at home than on the road in Champions League play. Sporting was 1-1-2 in group play as the visiting side. In the round of 16, they were blanked 3-0 by Bodø/Glimt in Norway. Knowing that they are playing from behind, you know Sporting has to play a different style. That may create opportunities for Arsenal to come up with some offensive attack. Arsenal has injury issues but they have performed well in Champions League play. Look for the Gunners to take advantage of Sporting’s road woes to come up with the victory here.
