BresBet Suspended: What It Means for Customers and Racing

BresBet and Bet St George Ltd. have both had their UK gambling licences suspended. The UK Gambling Commission announced that they had identified suspected social responsibility and anti-money laundering failings.

The suspension took effect immediately on 28 August and means BresBet is no longer accepting bets while the regulator carries out a review of its operating licence.

The action is particularly notable because BresBet has built much of its profile around British horse and greyhound racing. This includes a major sponsorship deal with trainer Fergal O'Brien. Bet St George, though a much newer site, has also forged strong links with the racing industry.

Why Has BresBet Been Suspended?

The Gambling Commission said its enquiries uncovered suspected failings. These related to social responsibility and anti-money laundering requirements.

While it has not yet published details of the specific concerns, or made a final finding that BresBet breached its licence conditions, the regulator has opened a review under Section 116 of the Gambling Act 2005.

The suspension will remain in place until the Gambling Commission is satisfied that the business is compliant.

What Does the BresBet Suspension Mean for Racing?

BresBet has developed a significant presence in British horse and greyhound racing since it launched back in 2021.

It is the leading sponsor of National Hunt trainer Fergal O'Brien's Gloucestershire stable. It’s also invested heavily in race sponsorships, as well as partnerships with horse racing and greyhound racing venues.

For now, there is no indication that the UKGC's action ends or suspends any of BresBet's existing commercial agreements. However, the longer BresBet remains unable to accept bets, the more questions are likely to arise around those partnerships.

Bet St George Also Suspended

Bet St George Ltd has been suspended at the same time as BresBet, with the Gambling Commission again citing suspected social responsibility and anti-money laundering failings.

The suspension is particularly striking because Bet St George is a very new entrant to the UK market. The bookmaker launched in March 2026, with a strategy centred on British sport and a heavily data-led approach to player marketing.

At launch, chairman and founder Nic Brereton spoke about using lessons from his previous work with medical data to personalise the betting experience. Interestingly, Brereton is closely connected to BresBet too.

Companies House records show Nic Brereton as a person with significant control at both BresBet Ltd and Bet St George Ltd. Rebecca Brereton is also listed as having significant control over both companies, which share the same registered office in Sheffield.

The simultaneous suspensions affect two connected bookmakers at very different stages of their development. BresBet, which has spent several years establishing itself within racing, and Bet St George, which entered the market only months ago.

Can BresBet Customers Still Withdraw Their Money?

If you’re a BresBet or Bet St George customer then there’s no need to worry. The Gambling Commission has specifically confirmed that the suspension does not prevent either BresBet or Bet St George from allowing customers to access their accounts or make withdrawals.

The UKGC has also told both operators that they are still expected to treat consumers fairly and keep them informed of developments that could affect them.

The customer support service remains operational at both bookmakers. So, if you experience any trouble making withdrawals, or have further questions, it’s easy to get answers. There is currently no confirmed date for when the bookmaker will be able to begin accepting bets again.
