The Czechia vs Republic of Ireland World Cup playoff presents a fascinating matchup. For the past few cycles, World Cup playoffs and Irish heartbreak have nearly been as synonymous as England falling short on penalties or a 1-1 draw for Scotland. But recent showings by the Irish attack have supporters believing the tie of Czechia vs. Republic of Ireland will be different.

After three qualifiers, the Irish sat on one point, seemingly out of the running. But they’ve won three straight, carried by Troy Parrott’s one-man show. Parrott has found the net five times in his past two matches for Republic of Ireland, lifting the Boys in Green to victories over Portugal and Hungary.

That’s the good news for the Irish. The bad news is that the defense offers major concerns against a Czechia side that can score regularly.

Czechia have found the mesh in 16 of their past 17 matches in Prague, with the lone exception being a scoreless draw with Croatia. But while the Czechs have been almost impossible to defeat at home, the fixture quality has been far from impressive.

Czechia faced one of the weakest groups in UEFA, seeing Montenegro, the Faroe Islands and Gibraltar. The Czechs split with the Faroes, winning 2-1 at home and losing 2-1 at Torshavn. And while the Faroes are much improved from past cycles, Republic of Ireland offers a much stronger challenge.

Czechia’s strong home record makes covering the draw a wise investment. The Irish are almost certain to concede; 11 of their past 12 away matches have seen at least one goal by their hosts, and the exception was Gibraltar. While Republic of Ireland looked poor on offense to start qualifiers, the past performances in the final third have been no fluke.

The Czechs have blanked four of their past five visitors to Prague. But there’s a big difference between three minnows and a Croatia side that was perfectly content to play for a draw, and an Irish side that must get a result to progress. With the pressure on, backing the Irish to get something out of the match makes the most sense.

The Czechs’ strength on defense in past matches makes a level scoreline the most likely outcome. Republic of Ireland have scored two goals or more in three of their past eight away matches, but Finland, Bulgaria and Hungary aren’t quite to Czechia’s level on defense.

This match should progress slowly before opening just enough for both sides to get the match into extra time. At that point, the Irish seem like the likelier side to progress, making that (31/10) a sneaky value play. But for the 90 minutes, the score draw makes the most sense.
