The backcourt for Kentucky is flush with potential as DJ Wagner and Rob Dillingham arrive on the scene. Wagner possesses beautiful ball-handling skills that allow him to get to the rim at will, scoring smoothly with either hand. Thus, he’s at his best when he’s in the open floor and pushing the ball. The issue here is that he and Dillingham will likely be asked to play on the court together, and Wagner is the kind of scorer who needs the ball in his hands.
Another freshman that Calipari will lean heavily on this season is the lefty Justin Edwards. Edwards is one of the most well-rounded freshmen in his class, with the ability to slash to the lane and score easy buckets and an elite shooting stroke that makes him a mid-range and long-range threat. Being 6-foot-7, he possesses the size to shoot over a lot of opponents.
VETERAN presence
Luckily for Calipari, he’ll have a veteran presence with Antonio Reeves returning and Tre Mitchell entering the picture. Reeves can potentially have a massive impact, as the 6-foot-5 guard torched opponents from deep a year ago by shooting over 39%. He was pivotal in the team’s win over SEC rival Volunteers in mid-January when he led the team with 18 points. Freshman Cason Wallace was goose-egged by Rick Barnes’ squad and their terrific ball pressure, forcing him into five turnovers. The loss of Tshiebwe leaves a massive void, particularly on the glass, where they averaged 39.8 per game (No. 8 in D-1) and were first in offensive rebounding in the SEC. However, it should allow for the Wildcats to have better spacing on offense, especially with freshmen inclined to slash to the rim. Furthermore, the incoming shooters for the Cats may result in a more lethal perimeter attack, where the team only averaged 18 attempts per game (No. 315 in the nation).
Although I like their potential, I have concerns with Kentucky once conference play starts, particularly against tough-nosed defenses like Tennessee and Texas A&M. The Aggies, albeit undersized, boast one of the best pressure and trap defenses in college basketball. The Cats don’t play either team until the calendar year turns over, so there’s plenty of time for Cal’s freshmen to gel and find their rhythm before then.
