Huskies vs. Golden Eagles Game Preview

After nearly blowing a 26-point lead against Providence in the Big East tournament quarterfinals, UConn takes on Marquette for a third time this season. The Golden Eagles didn’t walk away comfortably from their tilt against St. John’s on Thursday, either, holding on for dear life in overtime.

The two teams split their regular season series, but the Huskies are performing at a higher level in the last month-plus. Shaka Smart’s bunch witnessed that firsthand on Feb. 7, allowing 1.28 PPP in a 15-point loss to Adama Sanogo & Co. While collecting nine wins over the last 10 games, UConn boasts a top-20 adjusted offensive and defensive efficiency (per Bart Torvik) during that stretch. The Huskies only trail Gonzaga for the top spot in the ratings since the beginning of February.

Not only should Hurley’s motion offense exploit the Golden Eagles’ vulnerable defense, which struggles against cutting action in particular, but his own upper-echelon interior defense should also be up to the task. According to ShotQuality, Marquette point guard Tyler Kolek — the 2022-23 Big East Player of the Year — and his teammates attack the rim at the 35th-highest frequency nationally. If UConn is able to contain them to more so half-court shots, rather than on the fast break, its dominant rim protection and athleticism across the board should reign supreme.
