Fury Vs. NGannou: How They Match Up

Let’s start with the tale of the tape.

Weight269 pounds257 pounds
Reach85 inches83 inches
Record33-0-1 (Boxing)17-3 (MMA)

The sportsbooks are offering long odds on Ngannou for a reason. Not only is he older and smaller — though he’s not far from Fury in terms of reach — but he has never fought a sanctioned boxing match. Fury, meanwhile, has ascended to the top of the sport, defeating all comers, including another notably big power puncher, Deontay Wilder (twice).

Ngannou essentially has the proverbial puncher’s chance. Is it realistic to expect him to connect?

Perhaps it’s not as farfetched as one might think. After all, Fury has been caught and dropped several times before by Wilder. The American scored a total of four knockdowns throughout their trilogy.

Ngannou, for his part, easily knocked out the likes of Stipe Miocic, Cain Velasquez, Curtis Blaydes, and Alistair Overeem. Of that group, only Miocic even saw the second round. Ngannou’s power is very real, but four-ounce gloves also make his connections considerably more powerful.

And as a counterpoint, possibly the most technical striker he faced, Ciryl Gane, turned him into a grappler. Ngannou cruised to a dull decision victory, but he won’t have that option here.

Round Betting And Method Of Victory

Fury has been on a tear of finishes, with five of his past six wins ending via KO or TKO, and three of those coming within the first seven rounds.

We’ve also seen even a historically points-centric fighter in Floyd Mayweather, finish formerly iron-chinned Conor McGregor in a prior boxing vs. MMA superfight. And that was at a weight 100 pounds lighter.

Combine those two facts, and it’s no surprise Fury is a heavy favorite to win this inside the distance. Note that this fight is only scheduled for 10 rounds rather than 12. Here’s a look at the method of victory props:

Fighter, Method Of Victory
Fury by KO/TKO/DQ
Fury by decision or Technical Decision
Ngannou by KO/TKO/DQ
Draw
Ngannou by decision or technical decision

DraftKings Sportsbook also offers props on when each fighter may win the fight. Fury is expected to finish Ngannou sometime between the fourth and eighth rounds.

Additional Notable Props

DraftKings offers a huge selection of Fury vs. Ngannou props odds, and some of the exotics are worth a look.

Those who expect a competitive fight but ultimately a Fury victory may look at Fury to win by (T)KO but also suffer a knockdown. Lined at +800, that certainly wouldn’t be the most shocking outcome, as it only requires Ngannou to connect on one haymaker. Fury has shown in the past he can recover from such situations and subsequently connect with his own power.

Ngannou to be knocked down at least twice at -110 also intrigues. Fury is usually more of a damage accumulator. Particularly when he’ll be looking to stay outside of the wheelhouse of Ngannou’s power, look for him to pile up combinations rather than finish Ngannou with a big bomb.
