Tiger vs. Phil II Confirmed; What Will Betting Markets Look Like?

Posted By Esten McLaren on April 26, 2020 - Last Updated on April 28, 2020

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson will go head to head on the golf course once again in “The Match Part II” but this time they’re calling in some recruits. Future Hall of Fame NFL quarterbacks Tom Brady and Peyton Manning will join in on the action to make it a 2v2 matchplay event in May.

Not much is known about the event just yet, other than it will be played at some point next month, without spectators allowed on the yet-to-be-determined course. It will be a rematch of the one-day match between Mickelson and Woods held Nov. 23, 2018, at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas, NV. Mickelson came out victorious the first time around.

All proceeds from the event will go to COVID-19 relief efforts.

Tiger vs. Phil II: When is it happening?

The exact date has not yet been confirmed but May 24 has been mentioned as a possibility. The event still needs official approval from the PGA Tour. Regular Tour play is set to resume June 11 with the Charles Schwab Challenge after play was put on hiatus after the first round The Players Championship in mid-March.

Television coverage will be carried by TNT, with additional content on Bleacher Report. The official name of the event is expected to be The Match: Champions for Charity.

Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Fla. is rumored to be the host venue. Woods and several other PGA Tour golfers are members.

Tiger vs. Phil II: Betting options

DraftKings Sportsbook and FanDuel Sportsbook are both awaiting regulator approval for betting markets, but all legal sportsbooks can be fully expected to have a wide array of options for the first live, major sporting competition in months.

In 2018, Woods was a -200 favorite vs. Mickelson (+150). It’s unclear how Brady and Manning will be incorporated or the effect they’d have on the odds. Jeff Sherman of the Las Vegas Westgate SuperBook speculated it would be Woods and Manning together as -150 favorites over Mickelson and Brady (+130).

There are also sure to be a variety of prop bets around the match. The 2018 props included:

  • whether either golfer would hit the first fairway
  • who would have the highest average driving distance
  • who would take the first 1UP lead
  • whether either golfer would hit a ball out of bounds or into a water hazard

We’ll have more on the specifics of the betting markets once the books get approval. DraftKings has already told TheLines that the sportsbook will also have a free betting pool available for the event.
