Thundersnow: What Happens To Browns At Bills Bets With Game Moved?

Despite what Buffalonians and Clevelanders will tell you, there is, in fact, such thing as too much snow. The NFL is reportedly moving the game to Detroit for the Cleveland Browns at Buffalo Bills game in Week 11. Up to six feet of snow could fall on Buffalo by Sunday. There’s also a chance of “thundersnow,” a rare combination of a thunderstorm and a snowstorm.

So, what happens to your bet now if you already locked in some action before the game was moved to Motown? The answer varies by sportsbook. So let’s look at which will void bets and which will stand.

Browns, Bills, And Thundersnow: What Happens To My Bet With The Game Moved?

If you placed a pregame bet at FanDuel Sportsbook, WynnBet, or Caesars Sportsbook before new lines were posted with the updated location, your bet will be void and refunded. This was a safer route for bettors that may have jumped on an early under 47.5 as soon as forecasters started calling for a blizzard. Moving the game to Ford Field completely erases the basis in which that under bet was made.

The policy doesn’t just void sides and total betting, but props, teasers, parlays, and any other bets involving this game, too. Bettors are completely off the hook and able to place new bets on the game.

However, if you placed a pregame bet at DraftKings Sportsbook or BetRivers, you’re still on the hook for the bet. Per DraftKings’ house rules, “If a game venue is changed, and the home team remains designated as such, bets will stand.” BetRivers has similar policies.

The exception for both is that, if the Browns become the home team (i.e., the game is moved to FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland), the bets will be void. However, that’s not happening here.

In all cases, check your sportsbook’s house rules. Each one will have a policy on venue changes, specifically under football rules. (Note: venue change policies differ from sport to sport.)

Recent History of Moved NFL Games

The NFL moved a 2014 Jets at Bills game out of Buffalo and into Ford Field in Detroit. In 2010, the Metrodome’s roof collapsed under snow, so the NFL also moved a Giants at Vikings game to Detroit.

In both instances, the home teams (Bills and Vikings) remained so at the neutral site. With the Lions playing on the road against the Giants at Metlife Stadium, Detroit made for good option once again.

Given the proximity to both Buffalo and Cleveland, Detroit made geographic sense to get away from the … thundersnow!
