On Wednesday, theScore Bet announced that it will halt its U.S. operations on July 1. Following that date, the sportsbook will solely function in Canada. Below is more information on the shift, as Penn National continuing to lead the charge.

Penn National’s Next Steps With theScore Bet

For those unaware, Penn National Gaming acquired Score Media and Gaming in August 2021, reportedly for around $2 billion. As theScore Bet alters its focus to exclusively a Canadian (and specifically Ontario) audience, in which it’s considered to be the country’s most popular sports media app, Penn National is pushing its costumers towards Barstool Sportsbook.

This news is significant given the fact that theScore Bet functions in 12 states — highlighted by New Jersey, Colorado, Iowa and Indiana, four of the most sizable U.S. sports betting markets by the number of sportsbook operators in those states.

There is no official statement on how theScore Bet will transfer funds in the accounts of its U.S. customers to Barstool Sportsbook, but that would appear to be the likely transition.

Per the aforementioned news release, Jay Snowden, Penn National’s president and chief executive officer, foreshadowed the role that theScore Bet would play alongside Barstool Sportsbook.

“We are thrilled to be acquiring theScore, which is the number one sports app in Canada and the third most popular sports app in all of North America,” Snowden said last year. “theScore’s unique media platform and modern, state-of-the art technology is a powerful complement to the reach of Barstool Sports and its popular personalities and content.”

The termination of theScore Bet in the U.S. will come shortly after the NBA finals and Stanley Cup playoffs, signifying an opportunity for a smooth transition after a significant period for all sportsbooks.

Nevertheless, theScore Bet will continue to be a driving force in Ontario, the province with the largest population by Canada with almost 15 million people compared to 8.6 million in Quebec, the next closest province by population. Keep in mind, theScore was originally founded as a Canadian sports media company. According to a Penn National earnings call on May 5, the following figures were gathered about theScore:

  • 79% of Ontario bettors possess theScore media app
  • 50% of Ontario sports bettors also use Penn National iCasino product
  • 84% of bettors have wagered on an Ontario team (51% on Blue Jays)

Moreover, theScore announced a 10-year partnership with Toronto’s baseball franchise on April 8 — just four days after legalized sports betting was established in Ontario. It also shared there will be a 365-days-a-year, flagship sports bar and restaurant, which will be branded around theScore Bet.

“The fan experience is evolving and this monumental partnership with theScore Bet offers compelling new ways for sports enthusiasts to be a part of the game,” Mark Shapiro, Blue Jays president and CEO, said. “We are excited to be partnering with a Canadian company that operates at the highest level of the industry and understands our role in Toronto and Canada, to bring baseball to more fans nationwide.”
