The Match 9 Odds: Rory McIlroy vs. Max Homa vs. Rose Zhang vs. Lexi Thompson Skins Game
The Match 9, the latest iteration of the golf’s one-off exhibitions for charity, takes place tonight at 6:30 p.m. ET on TNT. This time, the event breaks with the team format and features four golfers playing a skins game format with the proceeds going to charity. With Rory McIlroy, Max Homa, Lexi Thompson, and Rose Zhang performing, this is the first in Match history to feature LPGA stars. The Match odds make McIlroy the favorite across betting sites.
The two PGA Tour players are at the top of the odds board, but there’s a whole host of bets you can make. After The Match 9, McIlroy will make his way to the top of Cognizant Classic odds this week, too, at PGA National this week.

The Match 9 Rules: What Is A Golf Skins Game?
The Match 9 will be a mixed skins format, with every hole having a set dollar value. The golfer who raises the most across the 12 holes will be declared the winner. On the four Par 3s, all four golfers will hit from the same tees, while the eight other holes will have differing tees for the PGA TOUR men and LPGA ladies.
In a golf skins game, a player wins the money for that hole if they have the best score. If two players tie on that hole, the money carries over to the next hole, and all four players are back in the running for even more money on the next hole.
Recent Form
Traditionally in The Match’s history, underdog bets have been the right call. Phil Mickelson won the original Match as a fairly sizable underdog. Recent form also suggests there might be a hope for an upset. Lexi Thompson came T16 in her only LPGA start, but she was right in the hunt until a bad Sunday. Rose Zhang carded a T7 at the opening event of the season as well.
The men, on the other hand? Struggling, at least in America. T24 and T66 in his two U.S. starts is how Rory’s season has started. Max Homa, on the other hand, has been incredibly hit or miss, with two top 20s, a T66 at the no-cut Pebble Beach, and then a missed cut in Phoenix.
Given that, there could be a chance for an upset.
My Thoughts On The Match Odds
Rory McIlroy is the best golfer of these four. If that were how these things worked, he’d win every golf tournament. With how his game looks since he returned from the Middle East, he’s not a strong favorite. He also looked pretty bad in getting beat by Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas in The Match 7, which could mean something about how much he cares about this.
Homa is pretty hit or miss at the best times, and that trait continues so far this season.
Lexi Thompson has not won since in 2022.
On the other hand, Rose Zhang has continued her college dominance at the professional level, winning her first LPGA start last year. A top 10 at the Tournament of Champions is enough to make me think she’s still in great form.
Also, Zhang is the least well-known golfer on this stage. She has the most to gain from winning because she has the most untapped potential in the cultural zeitgeist. Who cares enough to dial in? It might be Zhang. While this isn’t a guarantee by any means, a little Narrative Street on top of her great form makes Rose Zhang my bet.
