The 2026 NFL Draft is less than two weeks away, and once again, it is going to be a night that changes franchises for better or worse moving forward. What makes this draft especially unique is the amount of positional versatility throughout the class, which could create major swings in how the first round unfolds. One domino falling differently than expected could completely reshape the rest of the board.

And really, the draft starts at No. 2.

The expectation is that Fernando Mendoza will be taken No. 1 overall by the Las Vegas Raiders and become the franchise quarterback they build around after leading Indiana to a national championship. At this point, that feels like the closest thing to a lock at the top of the board, which means the real uncertainty begins with the New York Jets at No. 2.

That is where this draft gets especially interesting. There has already been trade chatter around both the No. 2 pick and the No. 3 pick, which currently belongs to the Arizona Cardinals. It would not be surprising if one of those selections, or both, changed hands before draft night. And depending on who actually makes those picks, the entire first round could swing in a completely different direction.

That is what makes this class so difficult to project. This is not a draft where there is a clean, consensus top five and everybody feels comfortable predicting how it is going to fall after the first pick. In a class like this, positional need can drastically influence the board. The seventh-best overall prospect might go second or third if the fit is right, while the second-best player in the class could slide to fifth or sixth simply because of team need and roster construction.

All it takes is a couple of trades and one or two curveballs, and suddenly draft boards around the league are thrown into chaos. That is why, for all practical purposes, the 2026 NFL Draft really begins at No. 2.
