Offense vs. Defense Stats

For a look at the numbers when both the Vols and Owls possess the ball, plus more betting insights and key player notes, head to our March Madness stats post for this game.

Which Team Controls The Pace?

Unsurprisingly, these programs are the antithesis of one another. Rick Barnes’ methodical offense is known for its low-post and midrange shots while the Vols’ length generates the seventh-highest offensive rebounding rate nationally. On the flip side, the Owls’ uptempo attack manufactures a top-20 catch-and-shoot perimeter attempt rate (via ShotQuality).

Despite squeaking by Memphis and failing to cover against FDU, there are a pair of traits that favor FAU — stylistically. For one, the Owls likely won’t have an issue against Tennessee’s turnover-happy defense, which forced 15 takeaways in Saturday’s win over Duke. That allowed the Vols to dictate the tempo for much of the second half.

Not only have Johnell Davis & Co. delivered a low turnover percentage overall, but they also accrued single-digit miscues against the Tigers’ ball pressure in the Round of 64. Hence, their previous success wasn’t solely a product of playing in Conference USA.

Then, there’s Tennessee’s “dominant” 3-point defense. The Vols are yielding the worst clip from behind the arc (26.1%) across D-I. That’s certainly baked into their elite defensive rating. Nevertheless, Barnes’ beefy rotation ranks slightly above average in regard to open 3-point attempt rate allowed. They’ve benefited from facing the Blue Devils and Ragin’ Cajuns’ inconsistent floor-spacing thus far.

If FAU is unlucky with its shooting efficiency, the Vols’ physicality should wear down the Owls at the other end. However, the game script doesn’t appear to be trending that direction — at least on paper.
