Tennessee sports betting made simple

If you plan to do most of your wagering on a desktop or laptop computer, the process might be a little different for you. In that case, visiting the website of legal Tennessee sportsbooks is where you need to start.

For users of tablets with Android or iOS operating systems, the procedures will be identical to those for a smartphone on the same operating systems. Think of your tablet as just a bigger version of a smartphone.

First off, you need to ensure you’re eligible to wager at TN sportsbooks. The basic rules and requirements are:

  • At least 21 years of age
  • Physically located somewhere in the Volunteer State when you place your bet

If you work for a sports team or are closely related to someone who is, Tennessee law says you can’t wager on events related to that team. For example, an assistant coach with the Tennessee Titans can’t bet on Titans games.

You’re free to wager on unrelated events, however. To stay on the safe side, you might want to avoid all contests in the same league that the team you work for participates in. Continuing with our example, that would mean all NFL events.

The only other reason you might be ineligible is if you’ve excluded yourself from legal gambling in TN. You don’t have to be a legal resident of the Volunteer State to take part.

If you’re eligible, and you have a smartphone with Internet connectivity, you’re good to get started. That process is a little different based on which operating system your device uses, however.

Android or iOS? The differences and similarities

Legal online sportsbooks in Tennessee will do their best to get apps for both operating systems up and running as soon as they can. It’s the most convenient way to bet on sports on a smartphone.

If you’re on an iPhone, you can find out whether the sportsbook you want to use has a sports betting app for Tennessee pretty easily. Here’s how:

  • Open the App Store on your phone
  • Search for the sportsbook’s name

There are two things you need to watch out for. The first is to make sure that the app you’ve located is actually for sports betting. DraftKings, for example, has a separate app for daily fantasy sports contests.

The other thing to check is to see if the app is actually for use in Tennessee. Some sportsbooks have separate apps for use in different jurisdictions because regulatory requirements differ from place to place.

If you’re on a phone which uses the Android operating system, you won’t find any apps searching the Google Play store. Google bans gambling apps in its marketplace.

You need to visit the mobile version of the sportsbook’s website. The site should detect that you’re on an Android device and give you instructions on how to download the relevant app for your device.

Regardless of which platform you’re on, it’s important to note whether the sportsbook you want to use has the appropriate licensure in TN. The Tennessee Lottery keeps an updated list. Right now, those licensees are:

Once the correct app is on your device, the next step is to either register or sign in. That varies depending on your experience with the sportsbook operator.

To create a new Tennessee smartphone sports betting account or not?

The law in Tennessee says you can’t have more than one active account with a particular sportsbook. Therefore, it’s important to know whether you have an account with a specific operator already.

If you’ve ever played DFS on DraftKings or FanDuel, you shouldn’t need to create a new account. Just login with those credentials and the app will walk you through the verification steps for the sportsbook.

The same goes for if you’ve wagered with either of those sportsbooks or BetMGM in a different state. This may not be the case, however, if a sportsbook maintains separate apps for different jurisdictions.

For example, DraftKings Sportsbook users who live in Illinois but had bet with that book in Iowa before DraftKings launched online in their state had to register new accounts for use at home. If you’re uncertain whether you need to register a new account, contact the customer service department of the sportsbook you want to use.

If you’re able to sign in with an existing account, you can skip the next bit of information. Should you be certain that you need to register a new account, however, read on.

What do I need to register for a new account online?

The app should walk you right through this process. Although it should be quite simple, there’s no shame in contacting customer support if you have questions along the way.

You will need to provide the sportsbook with a few pieces of identifying information. This is essential for the operator, and you will need to comply with relevant federal and state standards. Those pieces of info are:

  • Date of birth
  • Email address
  • Legal name
  • Mailing address
  • Social Security Number (for tax purposes)

Some apps will allow you to simply snap a photo of your state ID. If you choose to do so, you should make sure that all the information on that card is up to date.

Once you’ve completed the registration and the app has verified your eligibility, you’re just one step away from actually being ready to place your first legal bet on your phone. This is where you hand over some of your hard-earned money.

Funding your account so you can place your bets

Most of the online sportsbooks operating in TN will do all they can to make it easy to deposit funds into your account. The payment forms they usually accept include:

  • ACH payments from a checking or savings account
  • Credit or debit cards
  • Echecks
  • PayPal
  • Wire transfers

Just like your state ID, some apps will just let you snap a photo of your credit or debit card for funding purposes. In a similar fashion, if you want to use a checking or savings account and have online banking, you can connect those accounts to streamline the process.

Don’t rush to make your first deposit until you receive your first promotional emails from the sportsbook. It’s standard practice for sportsbooks to give you free bets or match the value of that deposit. Take advantage of those deals!

Once you’ve gone through all these steps, you’re good to browse the markets and place your bets. Good luck as you wager and as always, gamble responsibly.
