USA Women’s Basketball Odds: Americans expected to crush belgium
In an expected display of dominance, Team USA cruised past Japan, 102-76 in its opening match. The Americans overwhelmed Japan with height. Its leading scorers – A’ja Wilson (24 points) and Breanna Stewart (22) – both stand over 6-foot-4. Japan’s tallest player stands 6-foot-1. Despite a subpar shooting day (Kahleah Copper, Chelsea Gray, and Diana Taurasi combined to shoot 4-for-13), the U.S. Women’s Dream Team walked to 102 points.
Belgium presents a new challenge: they roster a WNBA player. Julie Vanloo plays is a rookie for the Washington Mystics, averaging 25.1 minutes per game. Vanloo is scoring just eight points per game, but is a prolific passer, adding 5.1 assists (ninth-most in the WNBA). While Vanloo is familiar with her opponents on Team USA, one role player is hapless against the firepower of 12 WNBA stars.
Team Belgium lost its first Olympic game to Germany, 83-69. They shot just 61.5% from the free throw line (8-for-13) and 27.8% from three (5-for-18). Vanloo accounted for 4-of-5 triples, sinking four of her eight attempts. Forward Emma Meesseman led scoring with 25 (10-for-15 from the floor). Expect Belgium to come out with a height-heavy lineup again, starting two centers and two forwards.
Meesseman and Kyara Linskens offer the most resistance on the glass, each standing 6-foot-4. Center Becky Massey stands 6-foot-1.
With so much height on the court, expect more opportunities for shooters like Gray, Plum, Ionescu, and Taurasi.
