2020 Super Bowl Odds: Westgate SuperBook Pegs Rams, Chiefs As Early Favorites

FairwayJay January 17, 2019
2020 Super Bowl Odds

Super Bowl 53 is fast approaching on Feb. 3, and books are expecting record wagering. But for bettors in Nevada, the opportunity to wager on the winner of the 2020 Super Bowl is already available.

The Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas released the 2020 Super Bowl LlV odds Jan. 15. The Los Angeles Rams (6-1) are the early favorite to capture next year’s Vince Lombardi Trophy. Jeff Sherman, the vice president of risk management at the SuperBook, sent out the odds.

The four remaining teams in the conference championships are the early favorites in the 2020 Super Bowl futures market: Rams (6-1), Kansas City Chiefs (7-1), New Orleans Saints (8-1) and New England Patriots (10-1).

New England has opened at 10-1 odds or less every season this decade, and the Patriots are playing in their eighth-consecutive AFC Championship game this weekend.

A shot of optimism

The biggest longshot to win the 2020 Super Bowl heading into next season is the Miami Dolphins (300-1). But 100-1 longshots and fans from Washington, Detroit, New York (Jets), Buffalo, Cincinnati, Oakland and Arizona can hold out hope that their team can be the next 1998 St. Louis Rams, who went 13-3 and won Super Bowl XXXlV after opening at 300-1 odds following a 4-12 season in 1997.

Those teams can look at this year’s Chicago Bears as another example of optimism going into next season. The Bears were 100-1 odds to win this year’s Super Bowl prior to the regular season. Chicago went from five wins the previous season to a 12-4 record and division title in 2018 before losing in the playoffs on a last-second “double doink” missed field goal — a bad beat for moneyline bettors but not for those who bet at FanDuel Sportsbook.

Don’t overlook the three Super Bowl Llll contenders that missed the playoffs this season at 12-1 odds or less as 2020 Super Bowl champions.

The Steelers (14-1), Vikings (16-1) and Packers (16-1) are among the top 10 favorites to win Super Bowl LlV next year. The Bears (12-1) and LA Chargers (12-1) are expected Super Bowl contenders next season after both made the playoffs this year with 12-4 records.

Four teams are in for this year’s Super Bowl Llll championship and evenly matched conference championship games remain with New England at Kansas City (-3) and Los Angeles Rams at New Orleans (-3.5).

The Super Bowl Llll champion is still difficult to predict. Regardless of the conference championship winners, this year’s Super Bowl is going to be a tossup. The SuperBook has also released Super Bowl Llll lines and over/under in advance of the conference championship games.

The New Orleans Saints are expected to be a -1.5-point favorite over either the Kansas City Chiefs or New England Patriots. Should the LA Rams advance to the Super Bowl, the odds are expected to be ‘pick ’em’ versus either the Chiefs or Patriots.

Before the 2018-19 regular season, the Chiefs (20-1) were the longest shot to win the Super Bowl of the four remaining teams. The Patriots (6-1), Rams (10-1) and Saints (14-1) were among the leading Super Bowl Llll contenders.

Jalen Hurts Transfer To Oklahoma Moves College Football Betting Futures

Chops January 17, 2019
College Football Betting Oklahoma

Two college football powerhouses picked up quarterback transfers from two even bigger (SEC) powerhouses.

One shifted betting futures markets; one didn’t.

Justin Fields bailed on Georgia for Ohio State. Fields was the No. 1 QB prospect in the 2018 class but opted to avoid the grind of SEC defenses for the friendlier confines of the Big 10.

Ohio State remained at +1,400 odds to the win the 2019-20 National Championship at FanDuel Sportsbook.

Jalen Hurts, who won a national championship for Alabama as a starter and a second — well, technically as a starter before being benched for Tua Tagovailoa — has now transferred to Oklahoma.

Upon news of the Hurts’ transfer, FanDuel moved Oklahoma’s futures from +2,000 to +1,400. The number dropped back to +1,600 as of Thursday morning.

That’s a sizable jump considering it’s still not 100 percent certain that Hurts will be eligible to start this coming year.

Hurts’ former team, Alabama, remains the national title favorite at +200. Defending champ Clemson sits at +250. Fields’ former team, Georgia, is the third favorite at +750.

Two interesting value plays going into the season include Michigan (+2,000) and Florida (+3,500). If you enjoy lighting money on fire, bet on any PAC-12 team.

New Jersey Sports Betting: Which NJ Sportsbook App Is Best For You?

Bill Gelman January 15, 2019
NJ Sportsbook Apps

New Jersey legalized sports betting is expanding at a rapid pace. The sportsbooks available in the Garden State include seven Atlantic City casinos, two racetracks, and eight mobile online products available. And there are more to come.

In this article, we’re going to focus on the mobile apps available in New Jersey. Each of the sites have their strong points, and it really comes down to personal preference and searching for the best odds.

Here is a closer look at the eight options.

DraftKings Sportsbook

Land-based partner: Resorts Atlantic City
Available via: iOS, Android and web browser
Promo: $35 free (no deposit) plus free bet match up to $500 (no promo code needed)

DraftKings, one of two DFS heavyweights to cross over to the sports betting world, surprised many by jumping to the front of the New Jersey mobile sports betting line on Aug. 16 — a full 16 days before MGM went live.

Deposit options are limited compared to others on this list, but PayPal was added as an important option for bettors. The $5 minimum deposit is light on the wallet, but $500 will earn you the full promo amount. Withdrawals are processed via checks and the Resorts casino cage.

Although the apps are separate, users of the DFS and sports betting sites enjoy the benefit of the sites being linked, including a shared wallet.

You can pretty much place a bet on any sport, cricket and darts included. DraftKings offers a complete menu of betting options, including in-play and cash out options.

The betting carousel is extremely user-friendly. And the geolocation technology is top-notch. If you’re not located in NJ, users will not be able to see the lobby. The app automatically logs users out after a short period of inactivity. Wagers can only be placed online as DraftKings does not have a retail operation.

For more information visit our DraftKings Sportsbook review page.

FanDuel Sportsbook

Land-based partner: Meadowlands Racetrack
Available via: iOS, Android and web browser
Promo: Risk-free bet up to $500 for new bettors

FanDuel, another big-time player in the DFS world, merged with Paddy Power Betfair’s U.S. operations, resulting in the “largest online sports destination in the United States.” Name recognition is key, and so is having a strong sportsbook app.

There are several deposit and withdrawal options at FanDuel Sportsbook, making it easy to get in the action. The promo bonus is enough to attract attention, but several others are offering higher amounts.

Bettors can wager on all of the popular sports, and those not quite as popular. The full menu of betting options includes everything from moneyline to round robins, and of course the previously talked about in-play betting.

The live scoreboard feature allows users to track wagers and updated odds, with easy links to in-game bets. Sports betting rookies can take advantage of the informative FanDuel training camp.

For more information visit our FanDuel Sportsbook review page.

BetStars Sportsbook

Land-based partner: Resorts
Available via: iOS, Android; web browser in the works
Promo: New players earn up to $500 in free bets

The sports betting product is the newest under the Stars Group umbrella, joining the already established PokerStars NJ and PokerStars Casino.

The eight deposit methods ($10 minimum) include VISA, MasterCard, PayNearMe, eCheck, and casino cage, offering plenty of customer convenience. There are five withdrawal options.

Wagers are accepted on all the popular sports — football, basketball, baseball, hockey, soccer — and less popular sports such as tennis and cycling. Besides the popular wager options, there are in-game betting and cash out options. Odds boosts are available daily.

Users of the multiple Stars Group platforms have access to a shared wallet available to use in poker/casino and sports betting apps.

The iOS PokerStars NJ app highlights popular games with betting options and other sports posted above. The downside is bets cannot currently be placed via the web browser.

For more information, visit our BetStars how-to guide.

Caesars Sportsbook

Land-based partner: Caesars Atlantic City
Available via: Android, iOS and web browser
Promo: $25 free

One thing missing from the Caesars Atlantic City property is a retail sportsbook. But sister properties Harrah’s and the connected Bally’s do have one. The flagship property took a different route by rolling out its mobile/online product first, and it’s combined with the previously existing casino app.

Besides the eight deposit methods, the lobby features a full menu of sports wagers grouped by sport, MLB, NBA and NCAA football games take center stage, but it’s easy to filter personal preferences.

Bettors will find money lines, point spreads, parlays, futures, teasers, and props, but in-game and cash out features are not included at this time.

Total Rewards members will enjoy the added perk of earning tier credits.

SugarHouse Sportsbook and Casino

Land-based partner: Golden Nugget Atlantic City
Available via: Android, iOS and web browser
Promo: First deposit match up to $250 (Use promo code PLAY250)

The brick-and-mortar SugarHouse calls Philadelphia home, but the digital version is holding its own in New Jersey thanks to its strong affiliation with the Golden Nugget — the state’s Internet/mobile gaming leader. As an added bonus the sportsbook is built into the previously existing casino app (featuring more than 450 table games and slots) for an all-in-one package with a shared wallet.

Users will enjoy the 10 deposit options — four of which can be used for withdrawals. All of the popular American sports are on the board with a variety of betting options available — jackpot parlay included. Everything is easily accessible via the very busy looking lobby, which may be distracting to some as a result of the rotating promo ads and news feed.

Operator Rush Street Interactive has played up the strength of its live betting options for football games with more than 300 offers available the first week of the NFL season. Cash Out option is available, too.

For more information, visit our SugarHouse how-to guide.

888sport

Land-based partner: Caesars Atlantic City
Available via: Android and web browser (iOS coming soon)
Promo: $10 Free Bonus (no deposit needed); First deposit match up to $500

888 Holdings continues to go all in with its New Jersey mobile/online offerings as 888sport joins 888poker and 888 Casino. 888 bills its sports betting platform as “among the finest in the world.” It was the seventh sports betting platform to go live in NJ. Users have access to a shared wallet between sports betting, poker, and casino.

Customers can choose between eight deposit options along with five withdrawal methods. The welcome promo is currently among the best being offered.

There is a full menu of popular pro and international sports all types of wagers available, in-game betting included. Everything is easily accessible from the lobby that includes a running scoreboard of current games.

iOS users will need to wait a tad longer as the web browser still has the “coming soon message.”

For more information, visit our 888sport how-to guide.

William Hill

Land-based partners: Monmouth Park and Ocean Casino Resort
Available via: Android, iOS and web browser
Promo: $50 cash after reaching $50 in total bets

William Hill is investing heavily in New Jersey with retail operations at Monmouth Park (where New Jersey’s first legal sports bet was accepted) and Ocean Casino Resort, with another one in the works at the Tropicana.

William Hill’s hard push in NJ comes as no surprise being that they bill themselves as “America’s sports betting leader.” Besides operating 100-plus sportsbooks in Nevada, the company rolled out the New Jersey version of its Android and web browser platforms in time for the NFL season. The iOS app was launched in late September 2018.

The deposit and withdrawal methods are a bit limited compared to some competitors, but William Hill has been doing this for a long time, so the system is working. All of the major sports are on the board with a full variety of betting options, live betting included. Everything is easily accessible from the lobby.

The welcome promo is not as attractive as others — $50 in free money compared to much larger deposit matches at 888sport, BetStars and DraftKings.

Web browser users may experience some confusion if connected to the informational williamhill.us/new-jersey website, which includes links to the Nevada version of the app. Customer service representatives are in hand to help resolve the issue. Instead of searching Google Play, Android users will have an easier time downloading the app via nj.us.williamhill.com/betting/en-us.

playMGM Sportsbook

Land-based partner: Borgata
Available via: Android devices
Promo: None at this time

The Borgata is the top-performing casino in Atlantic City and is regularly ahead of the pack with its offerings. The MGM-owned property was ready to go with its retail operation the first day sports bets were accepted in New Jersey. Some were likely surprised that the playMGM Sports Android app was not the first to launch. For now, it’s completely separate from the casino and poker apps.

While MGM has name recognition, the app seems extremely basic compared to the Las Vegas version that is designed with strong graphics. The betting options are displayed within the individual sports menus. Users will not be able to access the lobby without creating/logging into account — another difference from the Las Vegas version. No deposit is required to check out the app.

Seven available deposit options make it easy to get in the game.

The biggest remaining question is when, as in when will the app be available to iOS and web browser users? Combined with a lack of a promo offer, bettors may find others options on this list more attractive.

2020 College Football Futures: Clemson, Alabama Early Favorites

Chops January 8, 2019
Clemson Alabama

After Clemson’s throttling of Alabama in the national championship game, the Tigers find themselves as early favorites to repeat in 2020.

Early futures at DraftKings Sportsbook have Clemson and Alabama at +200 to win the 2020 college football national championship. FanDuel Sportsbook lists Alabama at +170 and Clemson +250. At the Westgate Superbook in Las Vegas, Clemson is +180 and Alabama is +250.

Interestingly, before Monday’s national title game, Alabama was the listed favorite at the Westgate. However, given Clemson’s domination, the Tigers went from +350 to +180 by game’s end.

Ohio State (+700 at DraftKings, +850 at FanDuel) and Georgia (+800 at both) are next on the list of 2019-20 title contenders. Michigan and Oklahoma round out the rest of the favorites. All of the odds can be found below.

Notre Dame, which made this year’s playoffs but was embarrassed in the semifinals by Clemson, starts at +3300.

The odds somewhat line up with ESPN’s take on a way-too-early top 25.

Given their recent recruiting classes, Clemson QB  Trevor Lawrence ascension to likely Heisman favorite, and weak overall division, Clemson seem well-positioned to at least make another CFB playoff. And don’t kid yourself that last night’s national championship game is the end of Alabama’s dynasty. While the SEC will be stronger overall next year, Bama is still the team to beat.

FanDuel Sportsbook Gifts Chicago Bears Moneyline Bettors With Bad Beat Relief

FairwayJay January 8, 2019
FanDuel Sportsbook

NFL’s Wild Card weekend got wilder as emotions from fans and bettors were on full display Sunday night.

FanDuel Sportsbook decided to provide some bad-beat relief to wagers who bet the Chicago Bears on the moneyline to win the wild-card game against the Eagles.

The Philadelphia Eagles escaped with a 16-15 win after Bears’ kicker Cody Parkey’s game-winning 43-yard field goal attempt hit the upright and crossbar and fell back into the field of play.

The “double-doink” kick became to talk of NFL fans and sports bettors were slightly tipped at the line of scrimmage by an Eagles’ lineman. But that provides little solace to Bears’ bettors and fans.

FanDuel Sportsbook awards customers up to $100 credit

All online FanDuel Sportsbook customers in New Jersey who placed a single, moneyline wager on the Bears to beat the Eagles on Jan. 6 will automatically receive a site credit matching their stake up to $100 in their account.

“We are thrilled for the Eagles, but it was a tough way for the Bears to lose,” said Mike Raffensperger, CMO of FanDuel Group.

“With playoff season heating up, this was a way to prove there are more ways to win on the FanDuel Sportsbook, and once again, show why we are the most innovative and fun sportsbook in the United States.”

FanDuel’s creative approach

FanDuel continues its innovative approach to sports and gaming, and the company is changing the way consumers engage with their favorite sports, teams and leagues.

In November, the FanDuel Sportsbook made an impact in the industry with sports betting history. FanDuel became the first legal sports betting operator in the US to pay out future wagers on the college football national championship — more than a month before the final game happened.

The FanDuel Sportsbook awarded online customers early winnings and paid out all Alabama bets to win the national title. The Crimson Tide ended up losing in the national championship game to Clemson on Jan. 7, and the promotion cost FanDuel $40,000. Alabama bettors with future win wagers on the Tide rolled in the money more than five weeks ago.

FanDuel offers a sportsbook app in the state of New Jersey. FanDuel also has physical sportsbooks at NJ’s Meadowlands at the Greenbrier in West Virginia.

The company provides “More Ways To Win” through its live football sports betting TV show.

With the biggest single sports betting event approaching for Super Bowl LIII on Feb. 3, it will be interesting to see what FanDuel offers its customers next. It’s likely to be a touchdown catch for its customers.

FanDuel Sportsbook Expands NJ Betting Menu With Darts, Aussie Rules Football

Grant Lucas December 20, 2018
FanDuel Darts

Hot take: Stephen Hawking was a smart dude. If not only for one thought:

“Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.”

Nobody aspires to be Chumbawamba, a flash-in-the-pan, one-hit wonder. The Foo Fighters’ reputation — with their extensive catalog of hits spanning a generation —  is more desirable.

That’s the goal: Adapt and endure.

In New JerseyFanDuel Sportsbook is doing just that, introducing several new features within its NJ sports betting online platform to allow the operator to stay ahead of the curve. Among them: markets for professional darts and Australian rules football, and a shared wallet with Betfair Casino NJ.

Additionally, as best it can, FanDuel remains in stride with its chief competitors in the Garden State, particularly DraftKings Sportsbook.

New markets hit FanDuel Sportsbook

Certainly the load of FanDuel’s handle and revenue stems from the major sports leagues: NFLNBAMLBNHL, even NCAA football and men’s basketball.

FanDuel, though, has expanded its offerings.

The sportsbook recently rolled out markets for PDC darts (the professional circuit) and Australian rules football. While such niche sports likely won’t generate a significant or even notable bump in revenue, FanDuel casts a wider net. As a result, the sportsbook becomes one of a select few operations with such variety.

Of the seven other online sportsbooks in New Jersey, four offer darts: BetStars, DraftKings, SugarHouse Sportsbook, and 888 Sportsbook NJ.

Fewer operators feature Australian rules lines, as only three (all Kambi Group clients) include the sport: DraftKings, SugarHouse and 888.

FanDuel promoting online casino

Over the summer, Paddy Power Betfair completed its acquisition of FanDuel and rebranded its US operation as FanDuel Group.

The new owner runs the online Betfair Casino in New Jersey, and soon after, it seemed as if the online casino would get a makeover complete with FanDuel name and logo.

While that has yet to come to pass, FanDuel has begun promoting Betfair Casino within its sportsbook.

The promotion takes users to the Betfair Casino, which does not promote FanDuel Sportsbook. Still, another innovation could help both platforms enjoy a bump in users.

FanDuel announced that customers could use their sportsbook login information to gain access to Betfair Casino.

Essentially, FanDuel will not have a shared wallet with the online casino, allowing users to navigate seamlessly between the two products. As a result, bettors will have access to hundreds of real-money casino games at Betfair Casino, including blackjackroulette and slots.

FanDuel customers will also be offered a special promotion via Betfair Casino. Bettors will have the ability to play their first day risk-free up to $100 at Betfair. Per FanDuel: “Net losses within the first 24 hours of placing first real money casino wager will be given as casino site credit up to $100.”

On the heels of DraftKings

FanDuel’s newest features come on the heels of DraftKings Sportsbook implementing a preview of blackjack within its mobile app for Android and iOS platforms.

The New Jersey online casino industry has taken off in 2018, as monthly revenue records were set four times since March. Of course, sports betting in the Garden State has enjoyed a similar boom.

In November, sportsbooks in the state took in more than $330 million in wagers, resulting in more than $21 million in gross revenue. Online platforms alone accounted for 72 percent of the sports betting handle.

Yet sportsbooks, particularly FanDuel and DraftKings, the two mobile leaders in New Jersey, have recognized an untapped market within the online casino industry. Now both have avenues into that space, which will potentially make these companies even more powerful in Garden State.

Sports Data Rich: FanDuel Becomes NBA ‘Authorized Gaming Operator’

Marc Meltzer December 18, 2018
FanDuel NBA

The National Basketball Association (NBA) announced a deal to make FanDuel Sportsbook an authorized gaming operator of the league. FanDuel will continue to be the official daily fantasy partner of the NBA and the WNBA.

The new and expanded partnership gives FanDuel access to official NBA betting data as well as the use of NBA and WNBA marks and logos across FanDuel’s sports betting offerings. This part of the deal might sound familiar as the NBA has similar partnerships with The Stars Group (BetStars) and MGM Resorts International.

What makes this deal slightly different is that FanDuel will remain the NBA’s Official Daily Fantasy Partner. They will continue to operate both the Official Daily Fantasy Game of the NBA and the WNBA. FanDuel and the NBA will also continue to offer NBA InPlay, the interactive, real-time mobile fantasy game that launched in 2016.

Maybe… finally… possibly… a sportsbook will do something with NBA data

MGM Resorts was the first company to sign a partnership with the NBA to access official data. So far, the international casino operator hasn’t offered anything new for pro basketball bettors. BetStars just signed their partnership and hasn’t offered new NBA sports betting options either. Perhaps, FanDuel and their beautiful app will offer NBA bettors a new way to get down on the action.

“The core of our terrific partnership with FanDuel has been focused on innovation around the fan experience, and we are excited to extend it to include sports betting,” said Scott Kaufman-Ross, Head of Fantasy & Gaming, NBA. “Together, we have broken new ground in the fantasy world on both the NBA and WNBA, and now with the use of our official NBA betting data, will continue to collaborate on new ways to engage our passionate fans.”

FanDuel has one of the best, if not the best, mobile sportsbook apps on the market. While FanDuel’s in-play betting options load quicker than some of the competition, it can still get better. Official data from the NBA should reduce any lag, which will give bettors a few more seconds to place a wager.

FanDuel already offers a large and quick In Play menu for NBA games. In theory, the new partnership should make these offerings even better.

FanDuel engaging NBA fans like nobody else

NBA fans are looking for engagement with the game anywhere they can find it. NBA twitter is probably the most active audience of all sports leagues. House Of Highlights on Instagram has more than 11 million followers enjoying NBA videos all day and night.

The NBA has always been a step of other professional sports leagues in the US. Their fans expect to be able to engage with the NBA more than any other sport. This new FanDuel partnership has the potential to give NBA fans another way to engage with a sport and brand they already know.

“We share a clear view on how we can collaborate to bring basketball fans new ways to engage with the games and players they love. With the expansion of our fantasy agreement and addition of sports betting, we are excited to work together in ways we haven’t before.”

The more partnerships the NBA signs the closer American sports bettors are to unlocking new ways to gamble on one of their favorite games. This could be the first partnership with the NBA to actually offer sports bettors in the US new and improved sports betting options.

FanDuel Sportsbook

If you haven’t joined FanDuel Sportsbook yet, now might be the time. Now through the end of the year, you can get up to $500 back from the sports betting giant.

Nobody likes to join a new website and immediately find themselves in a hole. So, new customers to FanDuel will receive a Risk-Free Bet Up To $500. This promotion awards players a 100 percent refund on their first bet up to $500.

Lose your first bet and the refund will hit your account in the form of a free bet. FanDuel will refund the wager within 72 hours of the bet placement.

Of course, there are a few things to keep in mind. First and foremost, players have to lose the bet in order to receive compensation. A player can’t win their first bet and expect a free bet, too.

Players will also have to play through whatever Free Bet amount they receive. In other words, if they get that $500 back, they’ll have to wager an equivalent amount to be able to withdraw it.

FanDuel is one of the only sportsbooks that consistently has promos

A $500 refund is worth attention for most people. However, it’s pretty much par for the course at FanDuel Sportsbook.

So far, FanDuel is one of the few sportsbooks that consistently has promotions running in New Jersey. Here are some of the other promos available at FanDuel right now:

  • CFB Parlay Insurance
    • Place a parlay bet on Saturday college football games in November
      • The parlay must have at least 4 legs
    • All teams involved must have odds less than -200
    • If you make all but one leg of the parlay, FanDuel will refund up to $25 of your bet
    • You can do this promotion up to four times – $100 in refunds
  • NFL Close Loss Insurance
    • Place an NFL moneyline bet
    • If your team loses by six points or less, FanDuel will refund up to $50 of your bet
    • You will have to wager through any refunds before you can withdraw
  • NBA Parlay Insurance
    • Place a parlay bet on November NBA games
      • The parlay must have at least 4 legs
    • If you make all but one leg of the bet, FanDuel will refund up to $25
    • You can potentially receive $100 in refunds.

None of these promotions are going to make or break the bank. The important thing is that FanDuel understands how painful a loss in sports can be.

The last thing a sports fan wants after a tough loss is to find themselves lighter in the wallet. So, choose FanDuel for your sports bets, and you can wager with the assurance that FanDuel will help make it right if things go wrong.

CASHING TICKETS: Double Parlay Wins One Bettor $300K At FanDuel Sportsbook NJ

Sean Chaffin October 31, 2018
FanDuel Sportsbook

Wouldn’t we all like to win 150 to 1 on a wager? One lucky bettor did just that at the FanDuel Sportsbook at the Meadowlands on Saturday, hitting eight-team and 10-team parlays.

The bets were mostly on college football, with $1,200 bet on the eight-team and $800 bet on the 10-team. The second parlay had the same college football bets as the eight teamer but added two NBA moneyline bets on the Celtics and the Jazz. The $2,000 wager scored a massive payday of almost $300,000.

There was no problem with the NBA games. The Celtics beat the Pistons 109-89 and the Jazz topped the Pelicans 132-111.

In college football, the first few games went well. Washington State beat Stanford (+2.5) 41-38, California (+12) beat Washington 12-10, and San Jose State (-2.5) rolled to a 50-37 win over UNLV.

Tulane (+1) won outright 24-17 over Tulsa, and Syracuse (+2) kept things going with a 51-41 victory over North Carolina State. Mississippi State (-1.5) and Florida International (-3) both had decisive wins to keep the parlays alive. The Bulldogs won easily over Texas A&M 28-13 and the Panthers beat Western Kentucky 38-17.

Luck of the Irish?

One game on the parlay stood out and proved troublesome – Notre Dame. The Irish were a big 22-point favorite over Navy. It looked like smooth sailing for the Irish, who led 27-0 at the half. But a second-half rally by Navy looked like it might send these two tickets to the garbage bin.

By early in the fourth quarter, the Midshipmen had cut the lead to 37-22. The parlay win certainly looked in doubt. But a 22-yard pass from Ian Book to Miles Boykin helped the cause, bringing the score to 44-22. Navy drove deep into Notre Dame territory late in the fourth quarter and the dreaded “garbage time” touchdown looked like it might be a killer. But an interception by Jalen Elliott helped seal the win.

Notre Dame didn’t cover, but the parlay leg was a push – keeping the rest alive and ultimately a winner. The official payout on the eight-team parlay was $108,612.93 and $187.633.52 for the 10-team – a total of $296,246.45.

That late Irish interception was a six-digit savior, but there was one footnote to that game. The Midshipmen scored a meaningless 2-point conversion on their last touchdown. If they had kicked the PAT, that parlay leg would have hit as well – and paid out even more.

Digging the underdogs

If you’re a PAC-12 football fan, it was quite an interesting weekend with all five betting underdogs winning outright. Sports Illustrated notes that a $100 parlay bet on those underdogs to win would have paid big dividends to the tune of almost $117,000.

Even a $10 bet would have been a nice score. If only … ?

Golfing greatness scores six-figures

Not all the big winners have been betting football recently. Golf.com reports that one lucky Irish bettor made a €10 parlay bet with BoyleSports bookmaker over the weekend on two golfers, Xander Schauffele and Cameron Champ. The bet would pay out more than 1,000-1, and was certainly a longshot.

To win, Schauffele had to win the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai, and Champ had to win at Sanderson Farms in Mississippi. You know what happens next, but winning wasn’t easy.

“Schauffele looked like a longshot with just two holes to play, but birdied 17 and 18 to force a playoff with Tony Finau,” the site notes. “He birdied the first playoff hole to hoist the trophy.”

Champ had a four-shot lead on Sunday, but struggled on the first nine holes with Corey Connors surging for a share of the lead. But Golf.com notes that Champ “turned on the jets, making birdie on five of his last six holes to win by four.”

This time, the luck of the Irish prevailed and he scored €10,950 (about $12,400). Cha-ching.

Casino Sportsbooks Are Already Falling Behind Upstarts Like DraftKings, FanDuel

Marc Meltzer October 16, 2018

The repeal of PASPA is changing sports betting forever. Nevada no longer has a monopoly on single-game sports betting. Not only are more states offering sports wagering, but there are new sportsbook operators in the United States.

These new operators in the US have a different way of doing business behind the counter and in front of the counter. For better or worse, new sportsbook operators are offering different kinds of odds for bettors.

There have been hiccups like FanDuel Sportsbook glitch in New Jersey and the high vig at DraftKings sportsbook when it opened. While experienced sports bettors are up in arms, the new sports bettors in New Jersey are lining up to fire away at both sportsbooks.

Sportsbooks on social media

At the same time, the competition in new states is strong. The new sportsbook operators like FanDuel, DraftKings, and SugarHouse are regularly offering odds promotions. In fact, FanDuel offers a Daily Odds boost on certain bets.

These regular promotions are a new tactic in the United States. Casino sportsbook operators in the United States rarely offer odds promotions. In Nevada, you’ll have to keep up on personal Twitter accounts of sportsbook workers to see the occasional deals. Sometimes they’ll share the information with the media but that’s not very often.

This DraftKings Sportsbook tweet is just a heads up on what they’re offering bettors. There’s nothing fancy — just a reminder that customers won’t be able to wager on the playoffs for much longer.

The new sportsbook operators aren’t just using Twitter to promote themselves. Bettors will receive odds promotions straight to their mobile device if notifications are turned on. FanDuel sends out special wagering opportunities before a variety of big games.

FanDuel

Between mobile and social media marketing, the new companies are reaching customers where they are at all times. They’re not waiting for bettors to find them. This active approach is helping the companies out of the box.

New Jersey sports betting revenue

September sports betting revenue in New Jersey was big. You can already see a difference between traditional casino sportsbook operators and the operators with a focus on mobile wagering.

Legacy Casino Sportsbook Operators

Bally’s (Caesars Entertainment)
Retail – $394,046
Digital – $106,463

Borgata (MGM Resorts)
Retail – $2,394,106
Digital – $120,938

Harrah’s (Caesars Entertainment)
Retail – $310,766
Digital – NA

New Sportsbook Operators

SugarHouse (Golden Nugget)
Retail – $619,030
Digital – $499,414

FanDuel (Meadowlands)
Retail – $4,377,474
Digital – $2,852,548

Resorts (DraftKings and BetStars)
Retail – $279,492
Digital – $8,505,940

Hybrid Operator

Ocean Resort (William Hill)
Retail – $999,858
Digital – $292,081

Monmouth Park (William Hill)
Retail – $2,138,097
Digital – $70,785

This isn’t about winners and losers but there’s a noticeable trend that sportsbook operators who actively promote their sportsbook product online and via mobile are seeing plenty of business. As expected, FanDuel and DraftKings combine for the vast majority of mobile wagers in New Jersey. Their mobile apps are great and combine for 87% of digital revenue in the state.

MGM Resorts’ Borgata is the shining star of the traditional casino sportsbook operators. Caesars Entertainment’s properties are lagging behind the competition.

Marketing to a new customer

The new sportsbook operators use twitter the same way their customers do. Sometimes they’re sassy, other times they just share a video clip of the game that’s on, and maybe they’re just sharing silly (sometimes obnoxious) gifs about the games.

Most importantly, the new sportsbooks are in touch with current events in sports. FanDuel Sportsbook will frequently retweet a news article with betting odds at their sportsbook. This isn’t rocket science. They’re just being relevant and marketing to their customers.

Meanwhile, the main social media accounts for casinos have a bit more broadly focused. Casinos have restaurants, traditional gaming, shows, and more to market than just sports betting.

A few casino sportsbooks have their own social media accounts but aren’t very active. You’ll typically find more information about the sportsbook by following the people who work at the properties.

What’s the right strategy for sportsbooks?

We’re still in the beginning stages of expanded sports betting so there’s no right or wrong here. There are just different approaches. However, it does seem that aggressive marketing and promotions by the new sportsbooks in New Jersey is attracting attention and business from the new sports bettors.

If the new sportsbook operators are onto something, the casino sportsbook operators better move quick or they’ll be left in the dust. Legacy brands mean less to younger customers than older customers because they’ve had less time to form a bond.

Fans and customers can be captured quickly online. Once a customer finds a sportsbook brand that they like they may never leave. If casinos want their sportsbook operations to reach their full potential they may have to change social and marketing tactics.

This is a new day for sportsbooks and sports bettors. The legacy companies better act fast or they could lose the market they once had to themselves.
