A winner of double golds in Tokyo, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone represents a top hope for another American gold in Paris. The hurdler is a massive favorite in track and field odds for her 400-meter event. There’s a chance she figures into the 4×400 relay team as well. McLaughlin-Levrone has a strong record of dominance in the 400-meter hurdles, and the betting market reflects that.

McLaughin-Levrone’s dominance began in the Tokyo Games. There, she ran the 400 in 51.46, breaking the world record to win gold. She followed up by breaking that new record with a 50.68 at the 2022 World Championships, winning gold once again.

After skipping the 2023 World Championships, McLaughlin-Levrone showed she didn’t have any rust at the U.S. team trial this summer. She again broke her own world record, posting a 50.65.

Given her incredible dominance, it’s little surprise she’s a prohibitive favorite over the field in Paris.

If any competition emerges, it figures to come from Dutch athlete Femke Bol. She won the World Championships with McLaughlin-Levrone absent and took silver in 2022. However, her gold-winning time from last year is about a second behind McLaughlin-Levrone’s mark. Bol did break 51 with a 50.95 earlier this year, though.

McLaughlin-Levrone probably can’t afford much slippage. But given the remarkable consistency she’s showcased, Bol will probably have to run a personal best to challenge her.

Will McLaughlin-Levrone Compete in 4×400 Relay?

Most likely, she will not.

While McLaughlin-Levrone helped Team USA to a gold medal in the Tokyo Games in this event, she did not participate in either the 2023 World Championship or the 2024 World Athletics Relays.

Though Team USA stumbled in a major way without her in 2023 (eliminated in qualifying after an illegal baton pass), they easily won gold in the latter. Gabby Thomas and Co. probably will have things handled.

Plus, the early heats — when McLaughlin would most likely be able to contribute — take place about 12 hours after McLaughlin expects to win the 400-meter hurdles.
