Will Izzo Hold Nowell In Check?

Make no mistake. The favored Spartans received their fair share of breaks before punching their ticket into March Madness. According to ShotQuality, Michigan State should have an under .500 record. But playing in a weaker pod of the NCAA tournament bracket certainly helps their respective cause.

You also can’t ignore how much positive variance the Wildcats received in their Round of 32 win. Although Marquise Nowell ignited Jerome Tang’s bunch with a 27-point, 9-assist performance, Kentucky’s perimeter shooting woes (4-of-20) didn’t hurt Kansas State’s cause. Enter Michigan State, which boasts the sixth-ranked 3-point efficiency (38.7%) across D-I.

Moreover, the Wildcats’ no-middle defense is susceptible to allowing open looks from behind the arc. Assuming MSU marksmen Joey Hauser, Jaden Akins, and Tyson Walker cash in, that will inevitably allow the Spartans to set up their half-court defense.

They’re much more reliable in that department — especially while the 6-foot-4 A.J. Hoggard would shadow Nowell — juxtaposed to their leaky transition defense. Nowell & Co., which employ their fast-break offense at the eighth-highest frequency, would greatly benefit if Michigan State’s 3-pointers aren’t fall in Madison Square Garden.

In what should be a tight affair throughout, whichever team finds a way to implement their preferred tempo will end up victorious. My projection delivered a number similar to the current line, so there isn’t much value in the market.
