A Wide-Open Field

Here is the SWAC men’s bracket.

Last year’s tournament champion Texas Southern (+240) is the favorite in the SWAC. The Tigers are perennial contenders, having won the regular season or tournament in seven of the last eight seasons. Their offense has lagged this year, ranking in the bottom third in scoring despite being middle of the pack in terms of possessions per game. KenPom lists Texas Southern 207th– not great, but the most highly-rated team from the SWAC.

Southern sits behind Texas Southern, but is the favorite at Caesars Sportsbook. Their best price is at +260 at FanDuel Sportsbook if you’re looking for better odds on the Jaguars. This season, the Jags locked down the perimeter, allowing just 5.5 made threes per game and holding opponents to a paltry 29.4% shooting from beyond the arc (15th). They’ve also played clean basketball all season, committing the fifth-fewest fouls and recording the third-most steals in the country.

Top seed Alcorn State (+450) is priced on a relatively-difficult path to the conference championship with no implied “weak” links in the bracket. Their opening round game against #8 Prairie View A&M (8-18, 8-10) may be one of the most tightly-contested games involving a top seed in the nation, with the Panthers still being just 10-1 at DraftKings Sportsbook to win the tournament. Alcorn State split the regular season series with Prairie View, and both games were decided by a total of four points.

Six teams are priced at 12-1 or shorter, with Alabama A&M (11-17, 10-8) being the longest-priced team at just 20-1.
