Becoming a Super Bowl-winning head coach is among the most challenging accomplishments in sports. Only 32 coaches have a Super Bowl victory, thanks partly to dominant runs by Bill Belichick, Chuck Noll, Bill Walsh, and Joe Gibbs. On Feb. 9, one of those Super Bowl-winning coaches returns to the sideline in Andy Reid. Across the way, Nick Sirianni looks to join the illustrious group. Sirianni and the Philadelphia Eagles take on Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs in an attempt to break up a historic dynasty — the Chiefs seek the first-ever Super Bowl three-peat.

How does Sirianni compare to Reid? Let’s examine their resumes and consider what’s on the line for both coaches in Super Bowl 59 in New Orleans.

Super Bowl Coach Comparison: Reid Vs. Sirianni

Previous matchups:

  • Oct. 3, 2021: Chiefs (-7) 42, Eagles 30 (Lincoln Financial Field)
  • Feb. 12, 2023: Chiefs (-1.5) 38, Eagles 35 (Super Bowl 57)
  • Nov. 20, 2023: Eagles (+2.5) 21, Chiefs 17 (Arrowhead Stadium)

Vince Lombardi owns the all-time best postseason record (minimum 10 games played) at 9-1. Walsh (10-4) comes in second, ahead of Gibbs (17-7), Belichick (31-13), and Jimmy Johnson (9-4). Reid owns the third-best postseason record among active NFL coaches, trailing Zac Taylor (5-2) and Kyle Shanahan (8-4). Sirianni slots in just behind Reid at 5-3.

Andy Reid Chases Greatness

No team in NFL history ever won three consecutive Super Bowls. The Chiefs are the fourth team to appear in three consecutive Super Bowls (Patriots 2017-19, Bills 1991-94, Dolphins 1972-74). While Reid has a long way to go to catch Belichick for the GOAT moniker — a mountain he may never summit with two more Super Bowls necessary even to match Belichick — he would undoubtedly cement real estate on the NFL coach Mount Rushmore.

Perhaps Reid already owns a spot there. This marks his sixth Super Bowl appearance, tied with Don Shula for the second-most ever and behind only Belichick (nine). Should the Chiefs pull off the three-peat, Reid would become the third coach to win at least four Super Bowls, tied with Noll and behind Belichick (six).

Reid’s 28 postseason wins trail only Belichick (31). He leads Pro Football Hall of Fame coaches like Tom Landry (20), Bill Cowher (12), and Bill Parcells (11). No active NFL coach currently challenges his number, with John Harbaugh (13) and Pete Carroll (11) being the closest.

Nick Sirianni Seeks Philadelphia Immortality

The winningest coach in Philadelphia Eagles history patrols the sidelines in New Orleans — he stands across the field wearing red and the KC arrow logo. But Sirianni has another chance to do what Reid never did: bring a Super Bowl to Philly. Only one head coach accomplished that thus far, Doug Pederson. The Eagles’ 2018 Super Bowl win over the Patriots dynasty was so legendary that the city built a statue to commemorate one of the greatest moments in NFL lore in Philly Philly.

Sirianni looks to become the seventh active head coach with a Super Bowl title. Breaking up the run of Chiefs Super Bowls likely would earn him some love from the rest of the NFL fanbase, too. It would also be a true cover-up of a disastrous 2023 season that pushed multiple outlets to suggest the Eagles were better off under another coach.

In 2022, Sirianni came oh-so-close to securing that legendary Lombardi Trophy for the Eagles, just to be snuffed out by a 17-point fourth quarter and more Mahomes magic.
