How The Chiefs Got Here

Despite perhaps his least-talented offensive cast around him, Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs to another Super Bowl appearance. For Kansas City, this is its fourth title game appearance in five seasons, a feat only accomplished by the Patriots (2015-19) and Bills (1990-93). It was the defense, though, that perhaps had the biggest role in this year’s run. Despite a rough overall season against the run, the Chiefs’ stop unit stepped up big in the playoffs, holding the Ravens – the NFL’s No. 1 rush offense – to under 100 yards rushing and just 10 points.

Travis Kelce fell under the public spotlight in 2023 but fell short of 1,000 receiving yards for the first time since 2015. However, the future Hall of Fame TE came up huge in the postseason, scoring three touchdowns in the final two playoff games. Rookie Rashee Rice emerged as a possible future staple in the offense and second-year Isiah Pacheco nearly crossed 1,000 yards.

The defensive secondary was one of the league’s best. L’Jarius Sneed came up with one of the biggest plays in the AFC Championship Game, punching a ball free of Zay Flowers at the one-yard line. In the Super Bowl, the defensive backfield will be put to the test, no matter which foe they get.

  • Wild Card Round: Beat Dolphins 26-7
  • AFC Divisional Round: Beat Bills 27-24
  • AFC Championship: Beat Ravens 17-10

Chiefs To Face 49ers OR Lions

While the Chiefs await their Super Bowl opponent, FanDuel Sportsbook released look-ahead lines. Should the 49ers win at home, the Chiefs open at +3 (-120) and the over/under at 47.5 points. Should the Lions clinch their first-ever Super Bowl, the Chiefs would be favored by -3.5 and the over/under set at 50.5 points.

Lions receiver Jameson Williams got the scoring started with a highlight end around touchdown run. The first half was unequivocally dominated by the Detroit offensive line, making even San Francisco’s talented defensive front look pedestrian. Both backs, Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, found the end zone as the Lions’ offense really found its stride early on. By halftime, the Lions rushed for the most yards on a Kyle Shanahan-led team in a first half ever. More importantly, they also held a 24-7 lead.

After a long ball bounced off a Lions defenders’ facemask and into the hands of Brandon Aiyuk, he finished the deal with a touchdown to bring the Niners to within seven. On the subsequent drive, the 49ers recovered a fumble and punched Christian McCaffrey in for his second touchdown of the afternoon to tie the game.

49ers Seal A Victory

A couple fourth down stops puts the ball back in San Francisco’s hands. Brock Purdy showed exceptional escapability and playmaking ability in the second half after a tough first half that included an interception. With three minutes left, the Niners punched in a touchdown from Elijah Mitchell. That touchdown might prove the nail in the coffin, putting the 49ers up 34-24.

The Lions clawed back into contention with another Williams touchdown. With just under a minute left, Detroit needs a miracle to win the game. A failed onsides kick closed the door on the game and sent San Francisco to Las Vegas.

  • Wild Card Round: BYE
  • NFC Divisional Round: Beat Packers 24-21
  • NFC Championship: Beat Lions 34-31
