Super Bowl Octopus Odds

Among Super Bowl 58 odds, bettors will spend their time feverishly handicapping odds for the point spreadmoneyline, and total. Couple that with a bevy of player props (while price shopping with TheLines.com’s prop finder tool), and you may lose sight of the tentacle-based market entirely. Let’s explore the meaning behind Super Bowl octopus odds and just how rarely it cashes in.

What Is An Octopus Bet?

Unfortunately, we’re not referring to actual invertebrates that you would find deep in the ocean. The closest octopi to Allegiant Stadium might be a costume-based one on the Las Vegas Strip. In this case, it centers around the sequence on the field, in which a player scores a touchdown — followed by the two-point conversion.

Remember that throwing for a score and then throwing to a different receiver for the two-pointer doesn’t count. However, it would meet the criteria if the same rusher or receiver delivers both — even if it’s a QB on the rushing or receiving end.

Every year, Super Bowl octopus odds are lined near +1200. That’s equivalent to a 7.7% implied probability. When sportsbooks offer the “no” price, it’s normally in the -10000 range. Hence, it’s understandable if this market is unappealing.

Mitch Goldich, the former Super Illustrated writer, coined the betting term in March 2019. He wished to single out the occurrence when the same player would produce a touchdown and two-point conversion.

Super Bowl Octopus: Rare Species

There have reportedly been 188 official NFL octopi notched since the start of the 1994 season. In fact, 11 of them came during the 2023 campaign. None of them have happened during the playoffs, though.

In Super Bowl 57, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts punched home the first octopus in the history of the Puppy Bowl Post-Game Show. It kicked off with a two-yard touchdown scamper before he darted in for the two-point conversion, knotting the score at 35 apiece in the last frame.

That netted DraftKings bettors a fine +1400 payout, inevitably shortening the odds this time around.

If you’re eyeing potential candidates in this matchup, anytime touchdown king Christian McCaffrey is a viable candidate for this longshot market.
