Tournament Notes

The Sun Belt tournament greatly rewards its top regular season teams. The top four finishers receive direct seeding into the quarterfinals of the tournament bracket. By contrast, the bottom four teams — Arkansas State, Coastal Carolina, Texas State, and Georgia State — must win two additional games to get there. The middle six teams must win one.

Outside of the top four, the market views South Alabama and Troy as a bit stronger than the other down-ballot options. They’re the only teams outside the top four with a greater than 5% chance of taking down the March Madness berth. Troy performed better in the conference (11-7 to 9-9). However, KenPom’s advanced stats prefer the Jaguars with a +6.23 adjusted efficiency vs. +3.59.

Speaking of adjusted efficiency, Marshall does rate a few points higher than the other top seeds. After the Thundering Herd, the other three are closely bunched just a bit ahead of South Alabama.

With the tournament taking place in Pensacola, Fla., South Alabama and Southern Miss may get a bit of fan support boost as they’re the closest teams.
