Summer Olympic Betting Restrictions

The Opening Ceremony in Paris is Friday, and some of the best Olympics sportsbook promos are now available for betting on Summer Olympics odds in regulated markets. However, rules and regulations across Olympic betting states differ. Let’s examine what options will be available or restricted in specific markets.

There are more than 50 sporting events at the Summer Olympic Games. Sportsbooks can offer odds on most of them in most markets, but some states have specific restrictions.

Iowa

Iowa Sportsbooks have some restrictions on what odds they can offer with the Summer Olympic Games betting. The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission updated its approved wagering options. In the update, the commission bans Olympic wagering on individual and team events unless all participants are over 18. This restriction rules out events like skateboarding, gymnastics, track and field, and the newly added breaking (break dancing). Locals will not find odds on the following events in Iowa:

  • Archery
  • Breaking
  • Gymnastics
  • Skateboarding
  • Swimming
  • Track and Field

Florida

There is only one online sportsbook in Florida, and that is the Hard Rock Sports app. Hard Rock does not offer betting lines on traditionally judged Olympic events, so Florida locals will not have access to odds on events like gymnastics, where a panel determines the winner. The following events will be available in Florida:

  • Badminton
  • Basketball
  • Basketball 3×3
  • Boxing
  • Golf
  • Handball
  • Field Hockey
  • Judo
  • Road Cycling
  • Rugby
  • Soccer
  • Swimming
  • Table Tennis
  • Tennis
  • Track Cycling
  • Volleyball
  • Wrestling

Massachusetts

Massachusetts sportsbooks will not offer odds on events where the outcome is primarily determined by judge or panel assessment. The following sporting events wont have legal betting options in Massachusetts.

  • Boxing
  • Breaking
  • Equestrian
  • Freestyle BMX
  • Gymnastics
  • Judo
  • Rhythmic Gymnastics
  • Skateboarding
  • Surfing
  • Taekwondo

“But if it’s a straight competition… track and field, swimming, where there’s a clear cut winner. You get their first, you win. It’s going to be fine but a lot of the events where there’s judging, gymnastics, where there’s an opinion, they probably won’t be available,” said Robert Westerfield, Vice President of Casino Operations at MGM Springfield.

States With No Olympic Betting

Some markets will have zero Olympic betting options for residents. These markets either have not launched sports betting in time for the Summer Games or have sports betting but do not offer odds on the Olympics. Bettors in these markets will have to travel elsewhere to find legal Olympic betting odds.
