Matchup Preview
Curry has been scoring even more than usual since returning from injury a few weeks back. Starting on March 5, he’s averaging 31.3 PPG, up from his season average of just under 30.
However, this matchup against Dallas may slow him down a bit. Not necessarily in the sense that Dallas plays good defense — they’re pretty weak on that end, actually. It’s more about how they play defense in addition to literally slowing him down by playing at a snail’s pace.
One can find a lot of faults with Dallas’ defense, but one thing they do exceptionally well is defend the 3-point line. No team allows fewer above-the-break 3s than the Mavericks, and those shots make up a lot of Curry’s distribution. Dallas also does a great job limiting makes there, although that make simply be good fortune. Regardless, Curry may run into more defensive pressure than he’s used to out there. He has a 3-point prop of , which does seem to indicate some market bearishness considering that’s below his season average of five makes.
Additionally, the Mavericks play at the second-slowest pace in the league. It’s tempting to attribute that to the walk-it-up style of Luka Doncic, who may or may not play here — he’s missed several games in a row with a thigh injury. But, even the past two Mavs games saw possession counts in the low 90s. Jason Kidd appears to be enforcing a methodical pace no matter his personnel.
Curry’s scoring and 3s should take a dip here. But, he’s always been adept at adjusting to what defenses give him. That may mean more of a distribution role. But will it be Curry or Draymond Green () ultimately completing the final pass for the assists here?
