NHL Futures: Four Storylines To Watch In 2022 Stanley Cup Odds

Written By Mo Nuwwarah on July 14, 2021

On July 7, the Tampa Bay Lightning wrapped up their second consecutive Stanley Cup with a 4-1 series win against Montreal. Can they make it a three-peat, which hasn’t happened since the Islanders won their third of four straight in 1982? Early 2022 Stanley Cup odds give them a solid shot.

However, they aren’t quite atop the futures board at most books. The Colorado Avalanche rate as slight favorites in a clear three-team top tier along with Tampa Bay and Vegas Golden Knights.

We’ll take a look at four storylines to watch in the 2022 Stanley Cup Odds.

Lightning Not Favored Despite Back-To-Back Cup Wins

One might expect the Lightning to be odds-on favorites to cash in on 2022 Stanley Cup odds. After all, they just went back-to-back in fairly convincing fashion, playing just one seven-game series against the New York Islanders.

However, Colorado’s strong regular season appears to carry more weight with oddsmakers. The Avalanche amassed 82 points to lead the league along with Vegas in 2021. Those two teams also posted the strongest differentials in the league, well ahead of Tampa Bay.

Bettors can buy the Avs at with Vegas () and Tampa Bay () trailing not fair behind.

All three of these teams are seen as a tightly bunched top tier, the only ones with odds in the triple digits.

After that, the odds progress in fairly linear fashion up to the longshot Buffalo Sabres and Detroit Red Wings at and , respectively.

Runner-Up Canadiens In Middle Of Stanley Cup Odds

The 2021 Montreal Canadiens were not considered a strong contender for the Stanley Cup, opening around +5000. They did little to change that perception during the regular season with 59 points ranking worst among playoff teams.

Still lightly regarded heading into the playoffs, bettors could still buy the Canadiens as high as +5000 at William Hill Sportsbook.

Of course, they defied the odds with a Cinderella run to the Cup Final. En route, they upset heavily favored Toronto Maple Leafs and Vegas Golden Knights. The Maple Leafs were around -300 favorites while the Golden Knights were even bigger favorites around -450.

The market has given the Canadiens a little more respect in advance of the 2021 season. Currently, the best available price on them is .

Can The Kraken Make A Vegas-Like Run?

In their inaugural season in 2017-18, the Vegas Golden Knights opened as the biggest longshot on the board, sitting around 200-to-1 or even higher at some books.

Of course, they opened eyes with a miracle run to the division title, which they followed with a dominating run to the Stanley Cup Final. Only there did they falter, losing 4-1 to the Washington Capitals.

For the 2021-22 season, another expansion team, the Seattle Kraken, evens out the total number of franchises to 32.

Like Vegas, Seattle will carry light expectations into the first year of the franchise. The Kraken opened at +10000 (100-to-1) at DraftKings Sportsbook. Perhaps hockey fans are expecting a Vegas-like run as they’ve moved up to +7500 at DraftKings while sitting at +5000 on FanDuel Sportsbook and BetMGM Sportsbook. The best available price is currently

Seattle will select unprotected players from the other franchises in the expansion draft on July 21. The rules for the draft are the same as those for Vegas in 2017, except Vegas itself is exempt. Keep an eye on the proceedings there as a perceived strong or weak haul could move the odds.

Which Teams Could Make A Leap?

Hockey can be one of the most difficult sports to predict thanks to its inherent variance. Unlike the NBA, where surprise teams rarely find themselves competing for the title — 2021 excepted — the NHL offers bettors more paths to big payouts on futures.

So, which teams could be poised to make a leap in 2022?

According to Spotrac, the following teams hold the most cap space heading into the offseason. They could potentially add the most talent to their rosters to facilitate a large improvement.

Team2020-21 PointsCap Space
Detroit Red Wings4848,150,277
New Jersey Devils4535,677,501
Buffalo Sabres3734,150,000
Arizona Coyotes5431,411,383
Boston Bruins7530,256,612
Carolina Hurricanes8029,432,667
Ottawa Senators5128,451,667
Minnesota Wild7526,264,746
Colorado Avalanche8225,489,167
Columbus Blue Jackets4823,861,639

Colorado’s appearance here after being one of the favorites in the 2021 playoffs shows why they’re atop the board for 2022. Not only do they return a strong team, but they possess top-10 cap room as well.

Aside form the Avs, the Minnesota Wild, Carolina Hurricanes and Boston Bruins have the combination of good-but-not-great present results and 2022 addition potential. Minnesota has the longest available price at .
