Deshaun Watson’s status for the 2022-23 NFL season remains unknown, yet the Browns continued to make quarterback headlines on Tuesday. After generating plenty of drama within the organization, Cleveland has shipped Baker Mayfield to Carolina for a 2024 conditional fifth-round pick. So how did Panthers odds change as a result?

Panthers Odds Movement Post-Mayfield Deal

At BetMGM Sportsbook, the Panthers Super Bowl odds went from +15000 to +12500 while Caesars altered their futures from +12500 to +10000. Their NFC South odds were also shortened from +1200 to +1000 at BetMGM.

There’s been slight movement in the win totals market too. Before the acquisition, Carolina sat at O/U 5.5 wins — with the over set at -130. Although it went up Tuesday, there’s -125 vig in the direction of under 6.5 wins. BetRivers is offering over 7.5 wins at +230, producing an implied probability of 30.3%.

Oddly enough, the Panthers traded more for rookie signal caller Matt Coral than they did in the Mayfield trade. In that move, they sent a fourth-round selection and a 2023 third-round pick in return for the No. 94 overall selection, in which they nabbed the Ole Miss product.

Week 1: Browns vs. Panthers Odds

Assuming Mayfield beats out Sam Darnold for the starting job, he’ll square off against his former team in Week 1. A multitude of sportsbooks pulled down those NFL odds following the trade. FanDuel Sportsbook was the first one to repost them, shortening the line from Cleveland -2.5 to -1. Their moneyline odds were adjusted to -118.

Moreover, the Browns opened as 4.5-point road favorites when the initial odds were released, so we’ve already seen quite a shift because of Watson’s uncertainty while facing four civil suits.

Over the course of their respective careers, Mayfield owns a 4.8% touchdown rate, which is a tad higher than Darnold (3.3%). Despite Darnold recording one more turnover (17) than Mayfield last season, both QBs dealt with their fair share of injuries — highlighted by Mayfield playing through a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

With that in mind, the four-year starter is listed at to win the 2022 Comeback Player of the Year award.

Inadvertently, Carolina possesses a pair of top-3 picks from the 2018 draft. Cleveland selected Mayfield with the No. 1 overall selection, and the Jets snagged Darnold two picks later.
