Tournament Notes

As stated above, A&M-Corpus Christi is priced at +110 to advance to March Madness in consecutive seasons. That’s good for a 47.62% implied probability. In March 2022, the Islanders took home a nine-point loss to Texas Southern. Now-junior Trevian Tennyson scored a team-high 18 points.

Unsurprisingly, the Islanders own the conference’s top rated adjusted offensive and defensive efficiency, respectively. Tennyson has developed into their primary scorer, generating the 150th-highest shot rate across D-I. Their top-150 offense is spelled by its uptempo attack, which is manufactured by its ball pressure. Steve Lutz’s group is forcing the 44th-highest turnover rate nationally.

Don’t just take a look at the favorite in a mysterious conference, though. Northwestern State, the team behind the Islanders on the odds board, is certainly worth a look. Not only do the Demons showcase a top-three rating at both ends in Southland play, but their setup also delivers the potential for high variance.

Despite getting swept in the regular season series against A&M-Corpus Christi, Northwestern State held a second-half lead in both games. Its below-average tempo caused some discomfort for the Islanders before they pulled away. Granted, the Demons are undersized, so controlling the glass — en route to dictating the pace — for 40 minutes certainly isn’t a given.

However, Corey Gibson’s crew boasts a top-100 perimeter scoring rate, another trait of a team that can deliver a potential upset. Senior guard Demarcus Sharp, who transferred over from Missouri State in the offseason, went off for 40 points in their most recent meeting. Sharp possesses the potential to go off over a two-game stretch, along with Northwestern State getting hot from deep.
