As we creep closer to the start of the 2026 World Cup, the matchups and rosters are crystallizing. All 48 sides had to submit their rosters by Monday. Therefore, we know who will be potentially on the pitch for each country when they get ready to start group play next week. Of course, that means that the betting odds are all out there as well. There are some questionable roster picks, injury concerns and plenty of big names ready to take the pitch.
One of the names that Portugal is going to look to as far as contributing is one of the biggest name in the sport in Cristiano Ronaldo. Let’s take a look at Ronaldo and some of the potential numbers that are out there ahead of the start of World Cup play.
Ronaldo’s Performance This Season
Ronaldo, like his counterpart Lionel Messi of Argentina, is in the twilight of his career. He’s spent the last four seasons with Al-Nassr of the Saudi Arabian Pro League. At age 40 (he turned 41 February 5), Ronaldo played in 30 matches and was a scoring machine. He piled up 28 goals to go with a pair of assists to lead the team. That included converting six of eight penalty kicks during the course of the year. In addition, he led Al Nassr to the Pro League title.

This marks Ronaldo’s sixth and presumably final trip to the World Cup. After all, it’s highly unlikely that he would be on the team in 2030 at the age of 45. In his career, Ronaldo has 22 appearances, 20 starts, in World Cup play. He has eight goals and one assist to his credit in those outings. Ronaldo scored once in the 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2022 World Cups. Meanwhile, he scored four times in 2018, including a hat trick against Spain in the group stage.
The question is, which version will we see this time around? Can Ronaldo turn the clock back to his prime or will this be a disappointing showing by one of the sport’s greatest players?

Putting Ronaldo off at the seventh-best odds to win the Golden Boot seems a bit of a tricky move by the sportsbooks to pick up some wagers from casuals. If you don’t follow soccer all that much, odds are you’ve at least heard Ronaldo’s name. That may coax some people to make a wager on him. However, as mentioned above, in four of his five previous World Cup runs, Ronaldo found the back of the net just once. When he scored more than once in 2018, he was 33. It’s safe to say that there are plenty more miles on his legs at this point in time. Expecting him to outscore guys like Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe, Lamine Yamal and Erling Haaland is a massive ask of anyone. It’s much more difficult to ask that of a 41-year-old.
As far as leading Portugal in goals, Ronaldo is currently the favorite. However, as stated before, age and previous production shows that it isn’t as clear cut as that. One has to factor in what he may have in the tank and how much run Roberto Martinez may give him. There are talented scorers on Portugal’s squad that could take opportunities away from Ronaldo.
