Uruguay Trying to Earn Spot in Round of 32

Uruguay in the World Cup

In 2026, Uruguay makes their 15th World Cup appearance overall and fifth consecutive dating back to 2010. La Celeste owns an all-time record of 25 victories, 14 draws and 21 losses in World Cup action. Uruguay entered the World Cup 16th in the FIFA world rankings as they moved up one spot from the previous iteration. La Celeste enters this match tied for second in the group with a record of no wins, two draws and no losses. A win sends Uruguay to the knockout round for certain while a draw or loss is a little murkier.

Uruguay Last Match

Against Cape Verde, Uruguay was stunned early, rallied to lead at the half and then had to survive an onslaught by the Tubarões Azuis to earn a draw. La Celeste dominated possession by a 65% to 35% margin in the match. Meanwhile, Uruguay held a 2.32 to 0.89 margin in expected goals though they lost the shots on goal by a 4-2 margin. In the first half, La Celeste gave up the opening goal and seemed poised to trail at the half before recovering. Maxi Araújo tied the match on a header in the 44th minute of play. Shortly after, Agustín Canobbio gave Uruguay a 2-1 advantage in the sixth minute of extra time off an assist from Araujo.

In the second half, Uruguay sputtered offensively and they were fortunate to wind up with the draw. La Celeste surrendered the tying goal in the 61st minute and survived several other opportunities. Uruguay had a chance in the second minute of stoppage time but couldn’t beat Vozinha, so they had to settle for a draw. Fernando Muslera, who turned 40 earlier this week, projects for his 19th World Cup start in goal here. He owns a record of 10 wins, three draws and five losses in those matches. Muslera has seven clean sheets in those contests.

Spain Seeking to Earn Top Spot in Group

Spain in the World Cup

In 2026, Spain makes their 17th appearance in the World Cup here as they chase their first title since 2010. La Roja has an all-time record of 31 wins, 18 draws and 19 losses in World Cup play entering this run. They enter the World Cup ranked second in the FIFA world rankings, trailing only Argentina. La Roja is one spot ahead of France. Spain is atop the group with a record of one win, one draw and no losses. A win secures the top spot. Meanwhile, a draw gives them the top spot unless Cape Verde drubs Saudi Arabia to beat Spain on goal differential.

Spain Last Match

Against Saudi Arabia, Spain took command of the match early and cruised the rest of the way to a victory. La Roja owned a two-to-one advantage in terms of possession in the match. In addition, Spain owned an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal in the match. Lamine Yamal opened the scoring in the 10th minute off an assist from Mikel Oyarzabal. Spain was never threatened the rest of the way in the match. After continuing to pressure offensively, Oyarzabal gave La Roja a 2-0 lead in the 21st minute of play. Aymeric Laporte drew the assist on that marker. Oyarzabal made it a 3-0 lead with his second goal of the match in the 24th minute. Dani Olmo drew the assist on that goal. That was the margin at the half.

In the second half, Spain kept pressuring and they weren’t challenged en route to the win. After keeping the heat on, La Roja scored their final goal in the 49th minute on an own goal by Saudi Arabia. With that advantage, Spain was content to p\ay conservative the rest of the way and rolled to the victory. Unai Simón projects to make his seventh World Cup start in this contest. He has a record of two wins, three draws and one loss in the World Cup. Simón has four clean sheets in World Cup play. Uruguay vs. Spain Prediction

Uruguay, for its past successes, is a disjointed side right now. La Celeste sputters offensively and doesn’t seem a threat here. Uruguay is facing the best defensive side in the group, if not the field as a whole. Meanwhile, we know how dangerous La Roja is offensively and that’s even more noticeable when Yamal is in the mix. After being stunningly blanked in their opening draw with Cape Verde, with Yamal on the pitch, it took just 10 minutes against Saudi Arabia for La Roja to score. They poured it on from there. This seems primed for Spain to win by multiple goals to take the group.

Our Prediction: Spain -1.5 (FanDuel, +162)

When it comes to finding the back of the net, backing Oyarzaba’ is a sound strategy. He scored a brace in the win over Saudi Arabia in the span of three minutes. In addition, he drew an assist on the Yamal goal that opened the scoring. Oyarzabal scored 15 goals in 34 matches in La Liga for Real Sociedad. Meanwhile, in qualifying for the World Cup, he had six goals and three assists in six games. Oyarzabal is a solid option to find the net and backing him here at plus money is a solid play.

Our Prediction: Mikel Oyarzabal Anytime Goal Scorer (FanDuel, +140)
