Switzerland Looking to Stake Early Claim to Group B Top Spot

Switzerland qualified for the World Cup after rolling through qualifying with a mark of four wins, two draws and no losses last year. The Nati played four international friendlies this year. Switzerland posted a mark of two wins, one draw and one loss. They entered World Cup play unbeaten in their last three matches (one win, two draws) as they take the pitch here. Switzerland takes part in their 13th World Cup tournament overall and their sixth consecutive one. The Nati owns a record of 14 wins, eight draws and 19 losses in World Cup action. Switzerland entered the World Cup ranked 19th in the FIFA rankings.

Against Australia, Switzerland controlled the flow of much of the contest but ended up with a draw. The Nati held a near 2 to 1 margin in terms of possession in the match. Switzerland owned a 9-4 advantage in shot attempts and a 3-2 margin in shots on goal in the match. After early pressure was thwarted, the Nati opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Dan Ndoye, who had a glorious chance earlier, scored to give Switzerland the advantage. Grant Xhaka drew the assist with a through ball to give Ndoye an opportunity. That goal was the lone tally for either side in the first half. In the second half, Switzerland gave up the tying goal in the 56th minute. They generated pressure, which led to a few chances, but couldn’t find the go-ahead goal.

Gregor Kobel is expected between the sticks for Switzerland. This marks his second career World Cup outing. He stopped two of four shots in the Nati’s 3-2 win over Serbia back in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup. Kobel posted a mark of four wins, two draws and no losses with four clean sheets in World Cup qualifying.

Qatar Seeking First World Cup Victory

Qatar qualified for the World Cup back in October so they haven’t been involved in many matches this year. Al-Annabi has just two international friendly matches under their belt in 2026. They fell 1-0 to Ireland and drew El Salvador. Qatar makes their second consecutive World Cup and their second overall after being the host country in 2022. Al-Annabi seeks their first win in World Cup play as they have a record of no wins, no draws and three losses to their credit. Qatar is ranked 56th in the most recent edition of the FIFA rankings.

Against El Salvador, offense was hard to come by as neither side was able to score in the match. Al-Annabi controlled possession in the match by a near three to two margin though most of it was in the midfield. Qatar lost the shot attempts battle 11-8 and gave up three shots on goal while mustering only one of their own. After an uneventful first half, Al-Annabi withstood a relentless attack by El Salvador late to earn the draw. Mohammad Al Mannai had Qatar’s best scoring option in stoppage time when his bad angle shot was stopped by Mario González.

Mahmoud Ibrahim Abunada expects to make his World Cup debut in goal for Qatar here. He made two appearances in World Cup qualifying, posting a record of one win, one draw and no losses. Abunada had one clean sheet to his credit in those matches.

Switzerland vs. Qatar Prediction

This one seems pretty one-sided on paper when you look at the numbers. Switzerland averaged 2.33 goals per game in qualifying while allowing goals in just two of six matches. Qatar has just three goals over their last five matches overall. They likely have some bit of rust after having several friendlies canceled. They struggle to generate much in the way of offensive pressure, as we saw against El Salvador. Based on what we’ve seen from Qatar, it’s tough to back them at all. After all, they became just the second host nation to fail to make it out of the group stage back in 2022. Switzerland should win this one by multiple goals.
