Sweden downed Tunisia 5-1 in their group play opener Sunday. The Netherlands battled Japan to a 2-2 draw in their group play opener in their previous match Sunday. Sweden Seeking 2-0 Start to Group Play
Sweden had a tough road but managed to qualify for the World Cup despite a dismal showing in UEFA Qualifying Group B. The Blågult posted a mark of no wins, two draws and four losses to finish last in the group. They advanced to the playoffs based on their Nations League ranking. Sweden downed Ukraine (3-1) and Poland (3-2) in the playoffs to earn their spot in the field. The Blågult make their 13th World Cup appearance here and their first since 2018. Against Tunisia, Sweden erupted offensively and battered Tunisia into submission to get off on the right foot. The Blågult actually lost in terms of possession by a 51.3% to 48.7% margin in the contest. Meanwhile, Sweden owned a 13-6 advantage in shot attempts and a 7-2 margin in shots on goal in the match. Yasin Ayari opened the scoring in the seventh minute as he scored from outside the box. Alexander Isak gave the Blågult a 2-0 lead with his goal in the 30th minute off an assist from Viktor Gyökeres. The Blågult gave up a goal just before the half to lead 2-1 at halftime. In the second half, Gyökeres gave Sweden a 3-1 lead in the 59th minute off an assist from Isak. Mattias Svanberg built a 4-1 advantage with his goal in the 84th minute off an assist from Isak. That goal was confirmed on VAR review.
In the waning moments of stoppage time, Ayari scored his second goal of the match. That goal was assisted by Lucas Bergvall and came in the sixth minute of stoppage time. Viktor Johansson or Kristoffer Nordfeldt starts between the sticks for Sweden here. Nordfeldt started the match against Tunisia.
Netherlands Looking to Bounce Back From Draw
The Netherlands finished their international friendly slate with two wins, one draw and one loss as they beat Uzbekistan. That was followed by a tense draw with Japan in their group opener. Oranje is making their 12th all-time appearance in World Cup play and their second straight here. The Netherlands own an all-time record of 30 wins, 15 draws and 11 losses in World Cup play. Oranje is still seeking their first World Cup title, having finished as the runner-up on three occasions. The Netherlands entered the World Cup ranked eighth in the FIFA rankings.
Against Japan, the Netherlands had their chances to put the match in the win column only to give up a late marker. That left Oranje with a draw as they try to earn a victory in this match. The Netherlands held a three-to-two advantage in terms of possession in the match. Oranje saw the shot attempts even (10-10) but owned a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. In the first half, the Netherlands had the better scoring opportunities but neither side was able to score. Early in the second half, Virgil van Dijk gave Oranje the lead in the 51st minute off an assist from Ryan Gravenberch. They gave up the equalizer in the 57th minute. Crysencio Summerville restored Oranje’s lead in the 64th minute off another feed from Gravenbench. That seemed that it would hold up until Japan scored in the 89th minute to even the match.
Bart Verbruggen made his World Cup debut in the contest against Japan. He made six appearances in World Cup qualifying for Oranje. Verbruggen had a record of four wins, two draws and no losses in those matches. He turned in three clean sheets in those outings.

Sweden has the edge in the group standings entering this one but the fact remains that they had the easier matchup. This is going to be a tougher challenge for the Blågult, who have to contend with a pretty solid Oranje side. Verbruggen is questionable here but the Netherlands are capable of rebounding. Oranje hasn’t lost in regulation in 13 straight World Cup matches dating back to their 2010 loss in the final to Spain. Sweden roughed up Tunisia but the Netherlands claw out a victory here in a match that likely ends up over the total to boot.
