Ivory Coast Seeking Another Upset

Ivory Coast finished their international friendly slate with three straight wins as they upset France. That was followed by upending Ecuador in their group play opener. Ivory Coast looks to carry that momentum with them as they make their fourth World Cup appearance. It’s The Elephants’ first appearance in the World Cup since 2014. Ivory Coast enters this match with a record of four wins, five losses and one draw in World Cup play as they hope to make it out of the group stage for the first time. The Elephants entered the World Cup ranked 33rd in the FIFA world rankings.

Against Ecuador, Ivory Coast was in a fairly even match but managed to earn the win in the dying moments. The Elephants lost the possession by a 51.6% to 48.4% margin in the match. Ivory Coast owned a 15-12 margin in shot attempts and a 4-1 edge in shots on goal in the contest. In the opening half, Ivory Coast was fortunate as Ecuador had a shot carom off the bar in the 30th minute. As a result, the sides were scoreless at the half. In the second half, the Elephants saw Ecuador hit the post again in the 46th minute. The teams traded opportunities before Amad Diallo scored in the 90th minute off an assist from Wilfried Singo. That stood up as the winning goal as neither side scored in stoppage time.

Yahia Fofana makes his second World Cup appearance between the sticks for the Elephants here. Fofana posted a clean sheet in his first appearance. He was tremendous during World Cup qualifying. Fofana posted a record of seven wins, two draws and no losses in nine matches. In addition, he turned in nine clean sheets in those matches.

Germany Try for Sole Possession of Top Spot

Germany qualified for the World Cup after they won UEFA qualifying Group A with a record of five wins, no draws and one loss. The Die Nationalelf outscored their opposition by a margin of 16-3 in the qualifying round to advance. Germany makes their 21st World Cup appearance overall and their 19th consecutive. They last missed the tournament back in 1950. The Die Nationalelf own an all-time record of 69 wins, 21 draws and 23 losses in their World Cup history. Germany entered the World Cup 10th in the FIFA world rankings as they seek their fifth title.

Against Curaçao, Germany erupted late in the first half and poured it on in the second half to earn the win. The Die Nationalelf dominated the contest as they owned a near two-to-one advantage in possession. In addition, they owned a 26-8 advantage in shot attempts and a 12-2 margin in shots on goal in the match. Felix Nmecha opened the scoring in the sixth minute off an assist from Florian Wirtz. Despite a relentless attack, it was Curaçao tying the match in the 21st minute. Nico Schlotterbeck gave Germany a 2-1 lead in the 38th minute off an assist from Nathaniel Brown. Right before the half, Kai Havertz made it 3-1 as he scored off a penalty kick. That was the score at intermission before Germany poured it on in the second half.

Early in the second half, Jamal Musiala made it a 4-1 score in the 47th minute off a through ball by Joshua Kimmich. Brown extended to a 5-1 margin with his marker in the 68th minute off an assist from Deniz Undav. Undav gave Germany a 6-1 advantage in the 78th minute with Kimmich drawing the assist. Havertz closed the scoring with his second goal of the game in the 88th minute off a through ball by Undav. Manuel Neuer makes his 21st World Cup appearance between the sticks here. Ivory Coast vs. Germany Prediction

Both teams were victorious in their respective openers though the way they went about it was completely different. Ivory Coast needed a goal in the 90th minute to upend Morocco. Meanwhile, Germany dropped the hammer on Curaçao in a one-sided beatdown. The Die Nationalelf has a dangerous frontline and can score on anyone. Ivory Coast is capable of holding their own offensively but Germany has 10 straight wins on the books. Their depth and experience advantage makes it 11 straight. In addition, the Die Nationalelf hasn’t recorded a clean sheet in their last seven World Cup matches. That makes both teams to score a viable option as well.
