France Trying to Secure Top Spot in Group I

France in the World Cup

In 2026, France logs their 17th World Cup appearance and their eighth consecutive one. Les Bleus reached the title game in both 2018 and 2022, winning the former and falling in penalties in the latter. France owns a record of 41 wins, 14 draws and 20 losses in World Cup play after their win over Senegal. Les Bleus entered the World Cup ranked third in the FIFA rankings. They are tied with Norway for the top spot in Group I after beating Senegal 3-1 and Iraq 3-0. Les Bleus own the top spot on goal differential, so a draw secures the top spot in the group.

France Last Match

Against Iraq, France took advantage of an overmatched foe to roll to a one-sided victory. Les Bleus owned a 56% to 44% advantage in terms of possession in the match. In addition, they created an expected 2.67 goals to Iraq’s 0.63 and outshot them by a 5-0 margin. Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring for France in the 14th minute with his 15th World Cup goal. Michael Olise drew the assist on that goal. That was the score at halftime.

Following a lengthy delay due to storms, France picked up where they left off in the second half. Mbappé scored his second of the match (and 16th World Cup goal) in the 54th minute for a 2-0 France advantage. Ousmane Dembélé assisted on that goal. Later in the second half, Dembélé scored in the 66th minute of play to give France a 3-0 margin. Olise drew the assist on that goal for his second helper of the match. Mike Maignan makes his third World Cup appearance between the sticks for France in this contest. He wasn’t tested in turning in a clean sheet against Iraq. Norway Seeks to Topple a Giant

Norway in the World Cup

In 2026, Norway makes their fourth World Cup appearance overall and their first appearance since 1998. The Landslaget enter this match holding a record of four wins, three draws and three losses. Norway enters this match ranked 31st in the FIFA rankings. The Landslaget stand 2-0 in Group and are tied with France for the top spot. They clinched a spot in the round of 32 but need a win over Les Bleus to secure the top spot. Meanwhile, France earns the top spot in the group on goal differential (+5 to +4) in the event of a draw.

Norway Last Match

Against Senegal, Norway took advantage of opportunities while their opponent failed to do so and that paid dividends in a one-goal victory. The Landslaget lost possession by a 58% to 42% margin in the contest though they did beat Senegal in expected goals by a 2.20 to 1.72 margin. In addition, Norway outshot Senegal 7-4 in terms of shots on goal in the match. Late in the first half, after coming up empty on a couple glorious chances, the Landslaget took the lead. Marcus Holmgren Pedersen scored in the 43rd minute to give Norway a 1-0 advantage at halftime. Norway nearly had a second goal before the half but a shot clanged off the post in extra time.

In the second half, the Landslaget maintained the pressure and it paid dividends. Erling Haaland scored in the 48th minute for a 2-0 Norway edge off a Martin Ødegaard pass. After Senegal scored to halve the Norway advantage, Haaland struck for his second goal of the match in the 58th minute. Patrick Berg assisted on the goal, which gave Norway a 3-1 advantage. The Landslaget gave up a goal in the third minute of stoppage time but held on for the victory. Ørjan Nyland makes his third World Cup appearance in this contest for the Landslaget.

France vs. Norway Prediction

We’ve got a match with two of the premier scorers in the sport with Haaland and Mbappé on the pitch here. Both men have scored four goals in their first two matches in this World Cup, putting them in the thick of the race for the Golden Boot. France has a little more wiggle room as a draw is as useful to them as a win when it comes to securing the top spot in the group. The concern here is that Norway may limit or rest Haaland and Ødegaard completely to keep them fresh for the knockout rounds. That puts them at a clear disadvantage here. France is clearly the deeper team even with the Landslaget’s stars on the pitch. Take France to win here.

Our Prediction: France ML (DraftKings, -170)

With France trying to lock down the top spot, you have to expect to see Mbappé and Olise, among others, on the pitch for Les Bleus here. Both sides were excellent in putting goals on the board in their first two matches. France has six goals to their credit in the first two matches. Meanwhile, Norway has six of their own, though four are from Haaland. With that said, there is enough firepower here on both sides to help this game over the total whether or not the Landslaget fields their optimal 11 or not.

Our Prediction: Over 2.5 Goals (DraftKings, -180)
