In a match that closes out play in Group F for a pair of sides in World Cup action, we’ve got a clash between a team poised to reach the round of 32 and one ready to mail it in. It’s the Netherlands battling Tunisia Thursday night. The Netherlands dropped Sweden 5-1 in their second group play match Saturday in their previous contest. Meanwhile, Tunisia was shut out 4-0 by Japan in their second group play contest Saturday. This marks the first time that the two sides have met in World Cup play. Let’s break down this Netherlands vs. Tunisia matchup.

When you’re looking for goals and one-sided results, Tunisia is a prime suspect. In their two World Cup matches, the Eagles of Carthage struggled defensively. They allowed nine goals in those two matches and both matches were decided by four goals. A 5-1 beating at the hands of Sweden set the tone for Tunisia in their opener. Meanwhile, that was followed by a 4-0 blanking at the hands of Japan.

On the flip side of that, we saw the Oranje rebound with a shellacking of Sweden in their second match. The Netherlands let a win slip away in their first match against Japan as they gave up the equalizer in the 89th minute. Instead, they settled for a 2-2 draw in that match. Seeing how the Netherlands smashed a Sweden side that put five goals on the board against Tunisia, you feel pretty comfortable that they’ll score several here to cover the line.

Gakpo Proving to Be A Scoring Threat

Gakpo had just seven goals in 36 matches for Liverpool in the Premier League this season. He came up big in World Cup qualifying for Oranje. In eight qualifying matches, Gakpo scored four times and assisted on four other goals. Once you get to the World Cup, he seemingly turns into an elite scorer.

Gakpo makes his eighth appearance in World Cup play here. During the previous seven appearances, he has five goals to his credit. In addition, he has an assist to boot. That includes two goals and an assist in the two matches this go-round. He likely finds holes in the Tunisia defensive setup and cashes in once again for the Oranje.

Gravenberch Solid at Setting Things Up

Gravenberch was Gakpo’s teammate at Liverpool and is a solid midfielder. He had five goals and three assists during the Premier League season in 36 appearances this season. Gravenberch isn’t necessarily a big offensive threat playing for the national team. In 29 career appearances for Oranje, he has four points to his credit.

With that said, however, two of those points have come in this World Cup. In the draw against Japan, he assisted on the goal by Virgil van Dijk in the 51st minute of play. That was the first goal of the tournament for the Oranje. In addition, he drew an assist on Crysencio Summerville’s goal in the 64th minute against Japan.

One has to think the Netherlands are going to push things offensively and pile it on. This is a Tunisia side with nothing to play for and morale is in the basement. The Oranje are tied with Japan for the top spot in the group and they have identical goal differentials. That means creating distance by blowing out Tunisia is in their best interest. That puts Gakpo in play offensively and you could potentially back him for a brace (+500) in this contest.
