Cape Verde Looking to Build Off Draw in World Cup Debut

Cape Verde found their way into the World Cup as they won CAF Group D with a record of seven victories, two draws and one loss. The Tubarões Azuis outscored the opposition by a 16-8 margin during qualifying. Cape Verde now makes their first appearance in the World Cup here. They represent as the second-smallest country by both population and land mass, larger than just Curaçao. Their reward for making the field? They look to build off their draw against powerhouse Spain in their opening group play match. The Tubarões Azuis enter the World Cup ranked 67th in the FIFA rankings.

Against Spain in their group play opener, Cape Verde was outplayed and overmatched yet earned a point as their defense held up. Cape Verde saw Spain dominate possession by a three-to-one margin in the contest. Meanwhile, the Tubarões Azuis fell 27-6 in shot attempts while losing 7-1 in shots on goal in the contest. In the opening half of the match, Cape Verde saw Spain attack relentlessly but kept the match scoreless thanks to solid goalkeeping from Vozinha. During the second half, Cape Verde withstood the charge of La Roja to keep things scoreless. Diney Borges had the Tubarões Azuis’ best scoring chance in the first minute of extra time only to be stopped. As a result, the match ended in a scoreless draw.

Vozinha, who turned 40 earlier this month, projects as the starting goalkeeper for Cape Verde. This marks his second World Cup match. After the draw, he has a record of no wins, one draw and no losses in Wprld Cup play. Vozinha has a clean sheet on the ledger as well. He has 27 starts in World Cup qualifying action in his career. Vozinha has a record of 15 victories, four draws and eight losses in those matches. He recorded 12 clean sheets in those outings.

Uruguay Seeking to Earn Three Points

Uruguay rolled into the World Cup as they had success in CONMEBOL qualifying. La Celeste finished qualifying with a record of seven wins, seven draws and four losses. That left them fourth in the group and put them in the field. Uruguay makes their 15th World Cup appearance overall and fifth consecutive dating back to 2010. La Celeste owns an all-time record of 25 victories, 14 draws and 21 losses in World Cup action. Uruguay entered the World Cup 16th in the FIFA world rankings as they moved up one spot from the previous iteration.

Against Saudi Arabia, Uruguay controlled long stretches of the match and owned the advantage in chances yet wound up with a draw. La Celeste controlled possession by a two-to-one margin in the match. In addition, Uruguay owned a 27-7 advantage in shot attempts and a 10-3 margin in shots on goal. During the match, La Celeste was aggressive early on in the match but couldn’t beat Mohamed Al Owais. As a result, late in the first half, Saudi Arabia scored, leaving Uruguay down 1-0 at halftime. La Celeste continued the pressure in the second half. Uruguay finally cracked the Saudi Arabia defense when Maxi Araujo tied the score in the 80th minute. La Celeste maintained their pressure in stoppage time but couldn’t score again, leaving the match as a draw.

Fernando Muslera, who turned 40 earlier this week, projects for his 18th World Cup start in goal here. He owns a record of 10 wins, two draws and five losses in those matches. Muslera has seven clean sheets in those contests.

Cape Verde vs. Uruguay Prediction

Uruguay is missing Ronald Araujo and Giorgian De Arrascaeta, who both are dealing with calf injuries. That takes a couple key pieces out of the starting 11 for La Celeste. With that said, Uruguay still have the ability to do damage offensively. Cape Verde is a side that is capable of defending for a full 90 minutes and they are a disciplined squad. The question is, can they find a way to counterpunch offensively? La Celeste is the better side and should win, though the line is too steep to back them. This has the makings of another scoreless draw or a 1-0 match. Take the under in this contest as a result.

Our Prediction: Under 2.5 Goals (FanDuel, -150)
