They entered World Cup play unbeaten in their last three matches (one win, two draws) before earning the draw against Qatar in their group opener. After Qatar’s Mahmoud Abunada took a yellow card, Breel Embolo converted the penalty kick in the 17th minute to give Switzerland the 1-0 advantage. That was the margin at the half. In the second half, the Nati had a chance to secure the win only to have a miscue. In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Miro Muheim scored an own goal. That gave Qatar a backdoor tie and left Switzerland lamenting the lost two points.
