Belgium Looking for Offense to Send Them to Quarters

Belgium in the World Cup

In 2026, Belgium makes their 15th appearance in the World Cup and their fourth straight. They aim to put their disappointing performance in 2022 behind them. The Red Devils own a record of 23 victories, 12 draws and 20 losses all-time in World Cup action. Belgium entered the World Cup ranked ninth in the FIFA world rankings. The Red Devils finished group play with a record of one win, two draws and no losses and earned the top spot in Group G.

Belgium Last Match

Against Senegal, Belgium put together a late rally, which sent them to the win after seemingly being dead in the water. The Red Devils held a 52% to 48% margin in terms of possession in the match. In addition, Belgium saw the shots on goal even at five while they lost the expected goals by a 3.58 to 1.74 margin in the match. In the first half, Belgium had a good chance early but didn’t capitalize. The Red Devils gave up a goal in the 24th minute to trail 1-0. That proved to be the score at the half as Senegal owned a 1-0 advantage.

In the second half, Belgium gave up an early goal, coming in the 51st minute, to go down 2-0. After Senegal nearly went up 3-0 late, Romelo Lukaku got the Red Devils on the board in the 86th minute off an assist from Thomas Meunier. That got Belgium back in the match. The Red Devils kept the pressure up and Youri Tielemans scored the equalizer in the 89th minute as he headed the ball in off a Leandro Trossard pass. After the sides couldn’t score again in stoppage time, that sent the match to extra time. Belgium hit the crossbar in the 118th minute and ended up earning a penalty kick in stoppage time. In the 125th minute, Tielemans scored his second of the match to give Belgium the lead. That goal stood up as the winner as Belgium held on for the win.

Thibaut Courtois makes his 20th career World Cup start between the sticks for the Red Devils here. He has a record of 13 wins, three draws and three losses in those contests. Courtois recorded eight clean sheets in those 19 World Cup starts.

United States Seeking to Take Another Step

United States in the World Cup

In 2026, the United States made their 12th appearance all time in World Cup action. It’s their second straight World Cup appearance. They’ve missed just once since 1990 with that coming in 2018. Entering the World Cup, the Stars and Stripes are 17th in the FIFA world rankings. All-time, they own a record of 12 wins, eight draws and 21 losses in World Cup play. The United States finished group play with a record of two wins, no losses and one draw to win Group D.

United States Last Match

Against Bosnia-Herzegovina in their round of 32 match, the United States got a solid defensive showing and timely goalscoring to advance. The Stars and Stripes was edged by a slim 52% to 48% margin in terms of possession in the match. In addition, the United States lost by a 3-2 margin in shots on goal despite winning in expected goals by a 0.89 to 0.25 margin in the match. Folarin Balogun nearly gave the Stars and Stripes a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute but the goal was waved off for an offside call. As it turned out, Balogun ended up scoring a goal in the 45th minute to give the United States a 1-0 advantage at the half. Sergiño Dest missed a chance for a 2-0 lead as he hit the post in extra time before the half.

In the second half, the United States went down a man as Balogun earned a red card in the 64th minute for what was deemed as serious foul play. Christian Pulisic nearly made it 2-0 in the 78th minute but had that goal disallowed for an offside call. Malik Tillman converted a free kick in the 82nd minute to make it a 2-0 score. Bosnia-Herzegovina had a pair of chances in stoppage time but Matt Freese was up to the task, securing the win. Freese, who came up a winner in his first three World Cup matches, projects between the sticks for the Stars and Stripes again. He owns two clean sheets. Check out the United States’ World Cup odds!

Balogun’s red card was to have him suspended for this contest. On Sunday afternoon, it was announced by FIFA that his suspension was lifted for a probationary period of one year. That means the striker can suit up for the United States in this one.

Belgium vs. United States Prediction

United States to Advance (FanDuel, -106)

Both sides are very good on the offensive end of the field and this is going to be a test for both sides. Belgium has to contend with a Stars and Stripes side that is capable of matching them offensively. On the flip side, the United States have their work cut out for them dealing with what Belgium brings to the table. The Stars and Stripes have their best player back for this one and that has to be a shot in the arm. In addition, the United States gets to play in front of their home crowd, which is always a plus. Playing at home, you have to give the edge to the Stars and Stripes as they advance.

Over 2.5 Goals (Fanatics, -145)

We’re looking at a pair of sides that can score goals so this has the makings of a high-scoring affair. Belgium has nine goals in their four World Cup matches, scoring multiple goals three times. Meanwhile, the United States has 10 goals on the board in their four matches.  They scored at least twice in each of their matches entering this one. The Red Devils are sluggish in their own back line and the United States can take advantage of that. On the flip side, the Stars and Stripes have their own issues defensively and that pushes this one over the total.

Leandro Trossard Over 0.5 Shots on Goal (DraftKings, -135)

Instead of chasing after a goal scorer in this match, we’ll play it a different way here. Leandro Trossard started the World Cup slowly, recording just three shot attempts in the first two group play matches. In addition, he failed to generate a shot on target in those matches. Since that point, Trossard turned things up to 11. He has nine shot attempts to his credit in the last two matches. Three of them have been on target and he has two goals plus an assist to his credit. With the expectations of offense in this one, banking on Trossard to at least record a shot on target here is a sound bet.
