Belgium Seeking to Earn Berth in Semifinals

Belgium in the World Cup

In 2026, Belgium makes their 15th appearance in the World Cup and their fourth straight. They aim to put their disappointing performance in 2022 behind them. The Red Devils own a record of 24 victories, 12 draws and 20 losses all-time in World Cup action. Belgium entered the World Cup ranked ninth in the FIFA world rankings. The Red Devils finished group play with a record of one win, two draws and no losses and earned the top spot in Group G.

Belgium Last Match

Against the United States, Belgium put together a big offensive showing, which sent them to the win while knocking the hosts out of the tournament. The Red Devils fell by a 56% to 44% margin in terms of possession in the match. In addition, Belgium owned a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal while they won the expected goals by a 2.01 to 0.63 margin in the match. After nearly scoring in the second minute of play, Charles De Ketelaere gave the Red Devils a 1-0 advantage off an assist from Nicolas Raskin in the ninth minute. After the United States tied the match in the 31st minute, De Ketelaere gave Belgium a 2-1 lead in the 33rd minute. He scored on a header from Leandro Trossard and that goal was the final one of the first half.

In the second half, Hans Vanaken made it a 3-1 score and took the wind out of the Stars and Stripes’ sails in the 57th minute. De Ketelaere drew the assist on that marker. The Red Devils stifled the United States the rest of the way. Meanwhile, Romelo Lukaku closed the scoring with a goal in the 93rd minute with Vanaken drawing the assist. Thibaut Courtois makes his 21st career World Cup start between the sticks for the Red Devils here. He has a record of 14 wins, three draws and three losses in those contests. Courtois recorded eight clean sheets in those 20 World Cup starts.

Spain Looks to Keep Title Hopes Alive

Spain in the World Cup

In 2026, Spain makes their 17th appearance in the World Cup here as they chase their first title since 2010. La Roja has an all-time record of 35 wins, 18 draws and 19 losses in World Cup play entering this run. They enter the World Cup ranked second in the FIFA world rankings, trailing only Argentina. La Roja is one spot ahead of France. Spain finished group play with a record of two wins, one draw and no losses for seven points to win Group H.

Spain Last Match

Against Austria, Spain got their offense in gear and that carried them to a victory in the round of 16. La Roja owned a 55% to 45% margin in terms of possession in the match. In addition, Spain owned a 1.69 to 0.63 advantage in terms of expected goals while dominating shots on goal by a 6-2 margin. Spain had early chances but couldn’t convert. Mikel Oyarzabal pulled his chance wide of the post in the ninth minute. Lamine Yamal came up empty in the 17th minute as part of a two-chance combination. Meanwhile, Portugal hit the bar in the 41st minute and as a result, the two sides went to halftime scoreless.

The second half saw the sides play plenty in the midfield with a lack of prime scoring opportunities. After the hydration break, we didn’t see too much more in the way of offensive chances and it seemed we were primed for extra time. However, during stoppage time, Mikel Merino scored in the 91st minute off an assist from Ferran Torres to give Spain a 1-0 advantage. Portugal had a couple chances after that but ended up coming up empty. As a result, Spain earned the win and advanced to the quarterfinals. Unai Simón projects to make his 10th World Cup start in this contest. He has a record of five wins, three draws and one loss in the World Cup. Simón has seven clean sheets in World Cup play. Belgium vs. Spain Predictions

Spain to Win in Regulation (-155, DraftKings)

While Belgium looked good offensively in the win over the United States, they simply aren’t going to get those sorts of opportunities of chances against Spain. La Roja has been extremely stingy defensively and tends to avoid the turnovers that Belgium thrives on in the World Cup. Simon has been stellar between the sticks in the World Cup and has seven clean sheets in nine World Cup appearances. With Yamal and Oyarzabal leading the way offensively, Spain is a dangerous offensive side. Look for La Roja to do enough offensively while frustrating the Red Devils to win in regulation.

Under 2.5 Goals (-104, Betr)

Spain has surrendered a grand total of nothing so far in the World Cup. That’s right, Simon has five clean sheets to his credit. Meanwhile, La Roja has surrendered a total of five shots on target on 29 total shot attempts in their five matches. Belgium has averaged the second most shot attempts per match in the World Cup but most of their damage is done off turnovers. That’s not Spain’s calling card and we’ve seen how difficult it can be just to get a shot on target on La Roja. This shakes out like as a 1-0 or maybe 2-0 match at best, keeping this match under the total.

Mikel Oyarzabal, Spain Over 1.5 Shots on Target (+100, DraftKings)

While it’s easy to consider Oyarzabal to score, seeing he has four goals and an assist in his five matches in the World Cup, we’re attacking a different route here. He has 19 shot attempts on the board across the five matches, logging at least one attempt in each match. In addition, he has nine shots on goal, recording at least one shot on target in four of the five matches. Oyarzabal was rather quiet against Portugal but Belgium is more of a freewheeling side, which creates opportunities for both sides. Look for him to put a couple shots on net in this match to cash this prop.
