Australia Looking to Take Sole Possession of Group D Top Spot

Australia earned their spot in the World Cup as they won AFC qualifying Group I with a record of eight wins, no draws and no losses. The Socceroos blitzed the opposition as they outscored them by a 22-0 margin in group play. As a result, Australia qualified for their seventh World Cup appearance overall and their sixth consecutive showing. The Socceroos own an all-time World Cup record of five victories, four draws and 12 losses after their win over Türkiye. Australia entered the World Cup ranked 27th in the FIFA world rankings.

Against Türkiye, Australia came out determined to send a message after Türkiye captain Hakan Çalhanoğlu said he thought that his team would dominate the match. The Socceroos saw Türkiye control most of the game as they lost possession by a 71.6% to 28.4% margin. In addition, Australia fell 30-9 in shot attempts and 8-4 in shots on goal in the match. Immediately after Türkiye’s Arda Güler was thwarted on a scoring chance, Nestory Irankunda gave the Socceroos a 1-0 advantage in the 27th minute off an assist from Paul Okon-Engstler. That was the margin at halftime. In the second half, after withstanding an assault by Türkiye in search of the equalizer, Australia struck again. Connor Metcalfe tallied in the 75th minute from outside the box, giving the Socceroos a 2-0 advantage. Patrick Beach made a few saves after that to preserve the win and his clean sheet.

Beach, who turned in a clean sheet in his World Cup debut, projects between the sticks again here. He was rock solid in stonewalling a good Türkiye attack.

United States Shoot to Build Off Win Over Paraguay

The United States were up and down during their international friendlies leading up to World Cup play. They fell to Belgium (5-2) and Portugal (2-0) in March, beat Senegal (3-2) then fell to Germany. As it stands, the United States make their 12th appearance all time in World Cup action here. It’s their second straight World Cup appearance. They’ve missed just once since 1990 with that coming in 2018. Entering the World Cup, the Stars and Stripes are 17th in the FIFA world rankings. All-time, they own a record of 10 wins, eight draws and 20 losses in World Cup play after rolling past Paraguay.

Against Paraguay, the Stars and Stripes were clicking offensively and it helped them roll to a victory. The United States owned a near two-to-one margin in possession in the match. In addition, the Stars and Stripes owned a 16-9 margin in shot attempts and a 6-1 edge in shots on goal. The United States took an early 1-0 lead in the seventh minute on an own goal by Paraguay’s Damián Bobadilla. Folarin Balogun made it a 2-0 score in the 31st minute off an assist from Christian Pulisic. Balogun extended to a 3-0 margin with his second goal of the game. That marker, which came in the fifth minute of extra time, gave the Americans a 3-0 advantage at the half.

In the second half, the United States eased off the gas a bit and it gave Paraguay a chance. Paraguay got on the board in the 73rd minute to cut the margin to 3-1 but drew no closer. Finally, in the eighth minute of stoppage time, Giovanni Reyna tallied to finish the scoring off an assist from Alex Freeman. Matt Freese, who came up a winner in his World Cup debut, projects between the sticks for the Stars and Stripes again. Check out the United States’ World Cup odds!

Australia vs. United States Prediction

This is a chance for each side to potentially clinch a spot into the round of 32 by prevailing here. The Socceroos are a dangerous team as they let the opposition control the game for long stretches. Once they lull a team into complacency, Australia counterpunches. That strategy worked in the win over Türkiye and Beach proved up to the task. Meanwhile, the Stars and Stripes were a well-oiled machine in their win over Paraguay. They’ll be hard-pressed to accomplish a similar feat in this contest. This one is going to be a tight match. With the way Beach looked against Türkiye, lean toward the under in this match.

Our Prediction: Under 2.5 Goals (FanDuel, -114)
