What Group is Slovakia in?

Slovakia battles for Group E with Belgium, Romania, and Ukraine. They had the longest odds pre-tournament but now sit to advance out of Group E. They were also the least likely team to win Group E, but those odds now sit at with their three points earned in the win over Belgium.

Belgium was the heavy favorite to make noise into the Euro 2024 bracket. However, Slovakia proved no slouch with their versatile scoring options and a world-class center-back in defense. With Ukraine favored to advance with Belgium before Matchday 1, Slovakia and Romania had similar odds to be reach the Knockout Stage. There is also a chance to qualify as the third-place team.

How Slovakia qualified for Euro 2024

A friendly Group J presented a path for Slovakia to qualify for the 2024 Euros. Portugal was the toughest test, winning ten out of ten matches, but Slovakia finished with a 7-1-2 record. They allowed the second-fewest goals (8) and had no issue locking up the second spot in the group. A tougher task awaits, with Ukraine and Belgium standing as true tests to make it into the Euro 2024 knockout rounds.

Notable Players

There is some experience starting from the back with Martin Dubravka in net. He started 22 games for Newcastle, including a couple of key performances in the FA Cup. Milan Skriniar is the team leader and captain of the defense. A highly sought after CB has played for Inter Milan and now headlines PSG’s defense. Denis Varvo will be part of Francesco Calzona’s pairing, which makes for a tough backline to break down.

A controlling midfield will be key to Slovakia’s success in this tournament. Stanislav Lobotka and Ondrej Duda will be preferred starters and look to control the temp of matches. The attacking players for Slovakia are not as polished as some of the other members, but Calzona is expected to lean on Duris, Suslov, and Bozenik. The 24-year old striker had nine goals in Portugal this season.
