Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout will reportedly miss up to eight weeks with a calf strain, and that has shuffled American League MVP odds greatly from where they opened before the start of the season. Shohei Ohtani MVP odds for the combo pitcher/hitter have now skyrocketed to the top of boards for Trout’s teammate in LA.
It’s the Angels’ dynamic duo that has also garnered the vast majority of the handle at DraftKings Sportsbook though. According to DK, a whopping 37% of AL MVP handle is on Trout, with Ohtani next at 27%. No other player has more than 6% of the handle.
As far as ticket count, no other players crack double-digit percentages there either. It’s Ohtani at 26% of total bets and Trout with a 13% bet count.
Let’s take a look at the current top-10 favorites to win AL MVP and how their odds shifted after Trout went on the injured list.
AL MVP Odds: Before and After Mike Trout Injury
All the previous value on Ohtani to win MVP has been sucked out of the market with the Trout injury and Shohei Ohtani MVP odds now … show … a heavy +150 favorite. However, he’s also never played more than 106 games in his two previous full seasons. Injuries have been an issue.
Below are the ten players currently at the top of the AL MVP market at DraftKings Sportsbook. You’ll also see what their odds opened at and what they were in May prior to Mike Trout suffering his injury.

Notable AL MVP Odds Changes
The Yankees now have two candidates near the top of the board. Aaron Judge AL MVP odds actually dipped through the first month of the season, but the Trout’s injury sent them from +2200 to +1400 at DraftKings Sportsbook. The best price currently available is . As of May 19, Judge’s 12 home runs are tied for second in Major League Baseball behind Ohtani’s 14. His .985 OPS ranks 11th. His 1.5 offensive WAR is tied for 21st.
Meanwhile, Giancarlo Stanton has made an even more impressive climb up the odds than Stanton. The Trout injury has sent his price from 50-1 up to 14-1 at DraftKings Sportsbook. The best available price for Stanton to win AL MVP right now is . He doesn’t rank as highly in those major offensive categories as Judge at this early point in the season, but he’s been raking in May with a 1.041 OPS so far this month. The major question with Stanton continues to be whether he can stay healthy through September.
Don’t Get Mad; Get Vlad?
If you’re one of the unlucky ones holding a Trout ticket, don’t get mad. Get Vlad?
Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s odds have dropped significantly since the Mike Trout injury, but with Ohtani such a huge favorite now, it’s possible there’s still some value left. Vlad is second behind only Xander Boegaerts in offensive WAR (Ohtani is T21). He’s also hitting .329 with a 1.060 OPS (2nd in MLB). What if I told you you could get a player who is on a 150-game pace to hit 41 home runs and drive in 112 runs. He’s also top-five in on base percentage, slugging percentage and is only striking out 15 percent of the time. Is +850 at DraftKings Sportsbook still attractive? That’s up to you to decide. His best available price across sportsbooks is .
If Ohtani gets hurt again, or if his pitching numbers drop off leaving voters to look more apples-to-apples at him versus other sluggers, Guerrero could become the favorite to win AL MVP.
