Auburn, Florida: The Teams To Beat
A longer shot in the preseason, Auburn has emerged as one of the top two teams in the country, along with Duke. Despite playing in the toughest conference, the Tigers managed a gaudy 15-3 record to top the regular season standings.
Super senior big man Johni Broome has led the way, as expected. He’s posting 18.6/10.6/3.3 averages, showcasing his well-rounded game.
However, Auburn did falter a tad down the stretch. They dropped their final two, although the second came in overtime against a top opponent in Alabama.
Florida was another opponent that toppled the Tigers. The Gators, a fellow analytics powerhouse (No. 4 KenPom, Haslametrics), closed the season with 10 wins in 11 games. Four of those came over ranked foes, including Alabama and Auburn.
Both teams are projected as No. 1 seeds in ESPN’s latest bracketology.
Plenty Of Competition In Deep SEC
Speaking of bracketology, ESPN currently has 13 SEC teams in the field. That would set an NCAA record.
Alabama, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Kentucky, and Missouri join the Tigers and Gators in the AP Top 25.
While any of those teams could emerge as the conference champion, the bracket gives the top four seeds a distinct advantage. Auburn, Tennessee, Florida, and Alabama are seeded directly into the quarterfinals.
The grueling conference tournament schedule forces the bottom eight teams to win five days in a row with no off days if they want to make a Cinderella run. That gives the higher seeds a distinct rest advantage in the later rounds.
