As the sun was coming up early Tuesday morning on the east coast, Saudi Arabia was completing the biggest upset in a match in modern World Cup history. That’s right, Saudi Arabia beat Argentina 2-1, during each team’s first match within Group C.

Needless to say, the reaction has been felt on a worldwide scale, and the video on social media has been amazing to follow as these Group Stage games continue to unfold.

The Match

The match started off exactly how every soccer fan could have envisioned – with a penalty kick goal from Lionel Messi, and a 1-0 lead for Argentina.

Before the match started, Saudi Arabia was anywhere between +1600 and +2500 to win in regulation over Argentina. After this goal, and only 10 minutes in, the odds (via PointsBet) shot up to +12500 or 125-1. What happened after that was nothing short of miraculous. It’s important to note that Argentina had THREE goals taken off the board for being offside. The Saudis survived into the half and came out scoring a pair of goals, one in the 48th minute, and another in the 53rd minute.

Biggest World Cup Upset In History?

It’s hard to determine if Saudi Arabia was the biggest underdog to ever win a World Cup match, with the nature of record keeping of past odds. However, it appears it’s definitely the biggest in modern, legal sports betting history.
