While big name players will be lacking this week at the Sanderson Farms Championship, low scores will be in abundance. So will the chances of a longshot winner or another first-time PGA Tour champion.
The 2019 winner was Sebastian Munoz, who won with an 18-under-par total on the Par 72 course. Munoz was the sixth straight first-time winner of the event since it moved to The Country Club of Jackson in 2014. At odds to win of 60/1 or greater, Munoz also had the lowest-odds of any winner of this event since 2011. Cameron Champ won the 2018 Sanderson Farms Championship with a 21-under-par total and odds of 65/1 or greater.
The Sanderson Farms Championship no longer runs adjacent to another PGA Tour event. The last two years the fields have improved and have been stronger, and along with full FedExCup points available, the winner is awarded with a 2021 Masters invitation.

Notable golfers in Sanderson Farms Championship
The young, rising stars in the field include three past PGA Tour Rookie of the Year players Scottie Scheffler, Sungjae Im and Sebastian Munoz, who won this event on the first playoff hole over Sungjae Im in 2019 for his first PGA Tour win.
Tour veterans include nine major champions: Louis Oosthuizen, Henrik Stenson, Sergio Garcia, Zach Johnson, Lucas Glover, Jason Dufner, Jimmy Walker and Stewart Cink, who won the recent Safeway Open to start the 2020-21 PGA Tour season. Other players of note include Players Championship winner Si Woo Kim and FedExCup winner Brandt Snedeker.
Other Sanderson Farms winners returning to this course course include Ryan Armour, Peter Malnati, and Nick Taylor.
Top Sanderson Farms finishers in 2019 returning for this year’s event include:
- 1 – Sebastian Munoz (-18)
- 2 – Sungjae Im
- 3 – Byeong Hun An
- T4 – Carlos Ortiz
- T6 – Bronson Burgoon, Dylan Frittelli
Carlos Ortiz also finished T3 in the 2018 event, while Corey Conners (T2) and Denny McCarthy (T7) had strong finishes and are playing this week.

Betting breakdown
Louis Oothuizen (16), Sungjae Im (24) and Scottie Scheffler (31) are the top players in this field from the Official World Golf Rankings. They will be among the top 5-10 betting favorites while other top-50 OWGR players Chez Reavie, Henrik Stenson and Sergio Garcia draw name and betting interest.
But while the favorites will surely take more betting action to win the event, this is another tournament to add longshots to your outright win wagers and top-10 or 20 finishes. There have been six straight first-time winners, each with odds of 60/1 or greater, suggesting there is an opportunity for a bigger score and better odds in the top finishing position market.
Last year Snedeker had odds of less than 20/1 in this event while a player like Sam Burns was near 100/1. Now Burns will likely be less than 25/1 this week and many other players like him are making a bigger impact on the PGA Tour and in the betting market in events like this – with fewer top-ranked players competing.
Last week’s Corales Puntacana Championship winner Hudson Swafford had odds of 200/1 or greater, and his odds will at least be cut in half for this week’s Sanderson Farms event.

The Country Club of Jackson has hosted the Sanderson Farms Championship since 2014. The course was redesigned in 2008 but still maintains its “Golden Age” architectural features by Donald Ross, with pushed up greens and closely mown run-off areas. The smaller than average sized greens are undulating and can be tricky and tough if the course is dry and fast.
In 2019, four new bunkers were installed on hole Nos. 3, 11, 14 and 16. The signature hole is No. 16 – a par 4 with water in front – and down the left side – and the new bunker on the left side of the landing area.
There is no playbook to success on this golf course, although most of the recent winners have had strength in putting. Cameron Champ used his power off the tee and hot putting to win in 2018. This is a course players can rip it off the tee with more forgiveness. In 2017 it was Ryan Armour‘s accuracy and approach play which opened up the required opportunities and his putter helped him prevail.
Predicting who will putt well on any given week is extremely difficult on the PGA Tour. That may also explain why so many longshots have won but also the fact that the talent runs deep on the PGA Tour. More young players are contending and winning, and when given the chance outside of other tournaments with the top-ranked players competing, the outsiders are proving they can play while showing off their high-level skills.
The players who have won or finished high on the leaderboard are strong in hitting greens, so Greens-in-Regulation is key to success. Last year’s GIR stat in this event was 67% hitting greens. There will be many players strong in that category and scores will be low with putting strength and a high-percentage of birdie conversions determining the leading contenders on the weekend.
